MPG 1.4tdi 3 cylinders

Featured Replies

Hi just done 400miles to a tank full, I drive on fast B roads 50mph approx,£40 to fill so my maths say its 10p per mile:giggle:, does this make sense filled with shell diesel , I do put redex into the fuel tank aswell, not sure if this is OK but I have always done so ,with my previous octy doing 120k with no problems,I had a stilo with the EGR valve blocked and the redex cleaned it very well after a couple of fills, and definately pulled better after.

Hi Seb,

Yep...Redex good! Won't do any harm and it does work. You probably don't need it all the time though in spite of what the instructions on the bottle says. Shell diesel is one of the best and has very specific cleaners to keep your engine systems clean, especially the egr.

Fuel consumption under the driving conditions your mention can vary due to actual driving style, load and condition of the car, even the fuel that's used. I think I am getting a bit more to the gallon than you at the moment. I use 'b' roads occasionally for a particular journey I have to make and get around 74mpg at between 40-50mph (about 7 pence per mile). I do not use 5th gear at those speeds (too slow) as this worsens the mpg figure. This also includes 13 miles total in that trip of dual carriageways at 70-80mph. Total trip is 75 miles cross country. Frankly, I was shocked the first time I did this trip to get that mpg figure, and of course very very pleased. I did not have to drive with economy in mind to achieve that figure. I regularly take 'A' and 'B' roads now if I'm not in a hurry as the car really pays me back with good mpg for the TLC I give it. Hope that helps.

yes excellent,it will take me a wee while to learn to drive it more economically but seems not to bad though,I do tend to go to 5th to early at about 45mph,so the magic is not to go to 5th really until you are on about 3000rpm approx, before this its not economical.

I should wait until I hit about 50mph in 4th before changing up because at the moment I do tend to have it in 5th and at 1600-1800rpm to low I think

Hello Seb,

Yes, you will get much much more to the gallon if you avoid using 5th gear until at least 55mph or higher. On the slower roads staying in 4th gear is much much better for the engine and fuel economy. It doesn't labour so much. I tend to use my 5th gear only when I get up to at least 55-60mph on faster roads. I found it made a huge difference, giving me another 10mpg on average by staying in 4th much more! But it's all part of finding out how best to drive the car...for you and the roads you tend to drive on in order to get that maximum fuel efficiency. I'm a bit warped (only a bit!!!)...and actually found it quite good fun experimenting to find out. You shouldn't necessarily need to use 3,000rpm much unless you are in a terrific hurry. That's the point where the turbo gate is opening quite a lot and real performance comes flooding in. Not good for economy especially. I've found on the standard 1422cc 3cyl (excluding the Greenline) that around 2250-2500rpm is good for faster economical cruising in 5th gear, and 1900-2200rpm in 4th on slower roads give amazingingly economical fuel consumption figures on those slower drives. Try it and let us all know how that goes if you can.

Drive safe mate!
