Not chains!

Featured Replies

They are highly rated - Maggitrak and Thule do similar.

Only really needed if you have low profile tyres and tight wheel arches.

Buy the time you've got all the bits needed to fit them, they cost roughly £300 (that's per pair)

What about this lot from the Skoda Accessories:-

» 16" and 17" Snow Chains

£ 65.00

Just a thought!?!

I use these - Weissenfels Klack and Go Quattro. Dead easy to put on and very effective.

ps note that if using conventional chains with a link that runs across the face of the wheel, they will mark an alloy rim, hence the above types are better.

I use these Weissenfels chains, they don't come into contact with the rims at all.

Quite right. I had a similar set for my BMW 316 some years ago.

The ones I meant are the cheaper ones that have a chain that wraps across the face of the wheel.

How about these, suggested to my by the chaps at Demon Tweeks yesterday when I rang them about winter tyres (of which they had none in stock) as an alternative;-

Certainly cheaper and would seem to be a good proposition in UK. OK probably wouldn't last as a full time alternative to days on end that you might use chains/spikes for.

There's a substantial thread about them a bit down the page...

To save a new thread, and because I got confused reading all previous posts, I seek some help from the knowledge that you all posses.

I currently have on my winter 215/60 R16s. I plan to get chains for a few runs to the Alps this season.

So my questions are as follows

1) Can I fit chains to just the rear? The manual implies this!

2) On page 221 of the manual, it refers to a depth of 45mm, what does this refer to?

3) Are these any good? My link

4) Would these be betterhttp://snowchains.co.uk/main/mof_rts_info.htm

5) Would these work on the front? My link

Many Thanks

Mr.P

Hi

The manual states you can only fit to rear wheels if you have 215/60 R16's fitted

I think the 45 is referring to the ET - offset of the wheel. The standard skoda 7J x 16 have an ET of 45.

Thanks Mike - anyone else able to answer any of the question?? Many thanks in advance, Mr.P

The snow chains look cheap compared to ones I have seen on the Roofbox website

Skoda ones cost same as autiosocks

Found these via a thread on another forum (SnowHeads)

They look like they might be fiddly to put on. They remind me of an old farmer's trick - bailing twine or rope tied round the tyre and rim.
