Rear seatbelt wont retract

Featured Replies

Right rear seatbelt wont retract in my Superb. Today it got caught by the door and made a quite big scratch on it. Is there any common problems for this and any solutions? Or is it better to change it?

Try coaxing it all out when you retract it.....then feed it back in squarely and try again.....i had this locked problem on the middle belt when it wouldnt shift.....works ok now

had trouble with my rear belts

after i left child seats with belts attached

not allowing belt to fully retract, thus 1 new belt

over a £100 ,lesson learned if leaving child seats in

i unhook belt when not being used to keep

the tyension in it.

I noticed that previous owner also had child seat attached all the time. Maybe there is the problem then.

The seatbelts in the B5.5 are a problem.

I had the driver's belt replaced under warranty as it did not fully retract. The replacement is only marginally better.

The centre rear belt locked up solidly such that I had to remove the reel unit to free it. The seat design is stupid - if the belt tensions fully against an unoccupied seat it locks up, and there's not enough "give" in the system to release it. Then you can't fold the seat and the car is technically unroadworthy.

I have solved the problem by stuffing a sponge (out of sight) below the gap between the squab and the backrest such that there is always a bit of slack in the belt caused by it going around the sponge when the seat is unused. When the seat is occupied, the belt webbing goes straight to its anchorage so there's no slack - hence safety is not compromised.

I'm thoroughly p i s s e d off at having to redesign chunks of this vehicle to make it usable - the damned thing is a 15 year old design.

Same problem here, I did think I was going to have to remove and clean the mechanism but this tip fixed it (not sure where I found it)

Pull the belt out fully and carefully from a distance spray Mr Sheen (other silicone based polishes are available ;) ) along its length then give it a wipe with a cloth.

It only needs a very light application DO NOT spray loads onto the belt.

It may need one or two applications - remember less is more.

Did this over a year ago in mine and they still retract nicely.

Nice Tip :p

It is a ball ache to fit car seats as well with the stupid locking the belt does. Have to fully let it retract and start again if enough seatbelt has not been let out.
