Get a squeaking sound from the back of the cabin whenever i go over small bumps/ road humps in my Fab Saloon ( it ain't me !), this invariably seems to be accompanied by the sound of air being pushed through an opening - lke a bicycle pump. Difficult to say but seems to be coming from the front wheel arches - a static bounce test of the chassis sees it coming to rest after the expected one and a half rebounds.

Are there any tell-tale signs for failure on modern shocks ?

Have you looked at the shock absorber? Does it show signs of leakage?

Slight leakage.
