snow tyres

Featured Replies

Hi, new to the fabia section, Wifes got a 07 fabia vrs and i am wanting to get some snow tyres for the front, whats peoples recommendations ie tyre sizes and brands etc. any info would be great Phil.

Should only be fitted in sets of four, I wouldn't fit just two on the front it's dangerous! :(

'Snow' tyres are pretty pointless in the UK as we don't get enough snow to warrant them.

Winter tyres however are a different kettle of fish altogether and well worth fitting a FULL set, you may struggle finding them now though as you have left it a bit late and most stockists will have sold out.

As stated, winter tyres on all 4 wheels and best bet is the on-line tyre suppliers. Most local dealers appear to be out of stock now :(

Ok a full set of winter tyres required, but what brands do people recommend and what size? as i am thinking of a set of steelies.Phil

I chose Goodyear Eagle Ultragrips as they got good reviews. Put them on standard alloys so 205 /45 x 16. Some folk do go for steels and slightly narrower tyres.

just orderd a set of sunny sn3830 snow tyres cost £157.30 for 4 from mytyres.com they also get good reviews they will be going on my spare audi A3 alloys

If your vRS is standard then save yourself a few quid and get a set of 15" wheels with 195/50/15 or 185/55/15s. You can pick up 15" wheels from A3s or mk4 Golfs cheaply, and the tyres will be less than 205/45/16s. I've got a set of Avon CR85s and they have been excellent these last two days.

Why is this?

Its illegal to mix tyre types

AND

The back end wont grip as well as the front and you could spin

Why is this?

Picture the scene. It's been snowy, cleared a bit, then frozen overnight. You are driving downhill and need to turn. Your front winter tyres have great grip, your back summer tyres have none. The back will come round round quicker than you can say "doh - there goes my no claims bonus".

Watch this video and then think how much worse it would be with front winters and rear summers.

Hi

I've got a vrs se too and my goodness this forum's invaluable, just checked re wipers going off and thanks to this site have found and changed the fuse!

Winter/snow tyres, lots of people say don't bother well all I can say is yes do bother!

I've got some toyo snow and ice boolers on the front and my czech express is unstoppable whereas last thursday she was like bambi on ice without them, vredstein do some great ones too quatrac I think theyre called. If youve got a good tyre place near they'll get you some steel wheels for about £15 each and the tyres to go on them will be much cheaper.

I live near consett where it snows in june and without these on I'd be stuck.

cheers dan

glad to see you got your locking wheel nuts sorted out and your winter tyres on dan

had my vredstein snowtrac 3s on for a week now they are briiliant

People insist of fitting 4 winter tyres. However manufactures of snow socks and chains say you only need them on the driving wheels, So why do you need 4 tyres?

My car is burred under 13 inches of snow here so I ain't moving.

Snow socks and chains are a temporary emergency measure to get you moving in heavy snow - they must be taken off when you get back onto tarmac. Winter tyres stay on the car all the time (well, until it gets warmer again and you go back to summer tyres).

If you want to see what happens when you have grip up front and none at the back go back up the page and look at post #11

Got mine fitted last Weds on (185/60/14) £56.00 a corner from tyremen website, grip was instantly better in the colder temperatures and have been faultless so far!

Got mine on but of little use this am. Snow that deep that cars are beached in the road. I'm leaving mine on the drive and working from home!
