Power steering issue Vrs

Featured Replies

Hiya

I've tried to search, but didn't have much luck..

I started my car last night and it had no power steering for about 5 minutes, then it suddenly started to work again!

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks

Im guessing you have checked fluid levels?

Joe

it could be a knackered battery, faulty steering angle sensor, or faulty power steering pump. Best bet would be to get it to a garage and have the faults read.

I had this problem today, all the warning lights come on, then all of a sudden I went to pull in and lost all power steering therefore nearly went into the back of someone!!! Turned car off for 5 mins, turned back on and all is ok. I bet it's something to do with this icy weather!!!

Is it a coincidence it's happened to us in this weather?

No coincidence - freezing cold temperatures are hard on batteries

My steering has felt a little twitchy today actually so maybe just the cold weather

For me... I had to get a new rack... Nice £300 down the drain...

Got quoted £700 from JKM mind...

Battery would be my guess.......... based on a similar experience a year ago.

Could it have been because I was in such a rush I just turned the engine on with out waiting for anything to set itself? I never do this and this is the first time I done it and I paid for it. The ASR, stearing wheel light, warning light and a red flashing warning light came on and was beeping! Steering problem hasn't happened since but I don't trust it now. Can a cold battery really do all this?

In a word 'Yes'. If your battery is on its last legs this cold weather will kill it.

Your options, as I see it are;

1 - put it on charge to help it out until you can...

2 - go and get it tested, and replace it if needs be, or...

3 - carry on ignoring the advice you're getting given :giggle:

I'm taking it all in, don't worry

I work right next a battery supplier, so testing it shouldn't be a problem.

I spoke to my mate this morning who drives a Fiesta ST and even he had dodgy steering with lights on dash for a bit. Cold weather is definitely to blame I think!!!

cold weather takes it out on the battery . . . and if its over 5 years old it wont like given all the amps needed at onces . . .some people hav found even turnin there radio louder or fulkl beams on can knock the power steerin off. Advice to get battery checked or changed but if u get it checked make sure u havnt been runnin car for long as it would heat up after a while and also get tit tested usin a proper battery diagnostic tester the normall testers will probs say its ok.

£45 quid cheapest iv found battery
