Help! Unable to get into gear (Felicia)

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I would really appreciate some help as I'm not sure what is wrong with my Felicia. I have been told by different garages that it could be either the clutch or the gear box.

The clutch suddenly felt stiffer than normal and then I couldn't get the car back into gear again. Since then the clutch feels as normal.

If the car is running and the clutch pedal is down it is impossible to get into any forward gear. When trying to go into reverse the gears grate.

If the car is turned off I can put the car into gear. If the car is then started with the clutch pressed there is a small jump forward, but the car can then be driven in that gear only.

Any help and advise would be greatly received.

Thanks in advance

Nick

It does sound like it could well be the clutch not disengaging properly - the first and easiest thing would be to check the cable hasn't stretched/snapped and is properly adjusted (no slack, clutch pedal should sit level with brake pedal), and see if tightening it up a bit makes any difference.

Something in the clutch release mechanism has broken.

I'd say clutch.....

clutch.. sounds like maybe the cable has melted on the exh mani or the pressure plate has busted. if you can get into gear with the engine off its not a gearbox fault

Definitely clutch or adjuster. Start by checking the cable hasn't melted, the visible release lever is ok, and the pedal height, because that's all free.

If it's not that, then I'd suspect one of the clutch plate, the thrust bearing, and the release fork in the bellhousing, and it needs dismantling to replace any of them.
