Water Pump on a Fabia 1.4 MPI

Featured Replies

Hi

I think the water pump has gone, the warning light on the dash has come on and driving home tonight (it was too cold to stop and not far) the temp gauge didn't move, normally its fine.

I've seen a lot of comments that the change the water pump you need to do the cambelt but this model, 1.4 MPI, has a chain - I'd like to think it makes it easier (cheaper) - anyone any thoughts?

Cheers

You can check the water pump by taking the lid off the expansion tank (with the engine cold) and running it up to temperature. There will only be a trickle into the top of the tank, but something all the same (look for the little pipe that the top hose clips onto being full of liquid).

I think you have two issues, actually. The level sensor in the expansion tank is faulty, which gives a false reading in the cold, and the coolant temperature sensor and/or thermostat body has failed. As a SWB Landy owner, I assume you do a bit of DIY mechanic-ing, in which case swapping out the affected parts should be no trouble. Post back if you need any pointers... :)

Thanks, nice tip, I tried this afternoon and could see the water coming in. That said it did it from cold so I think the stat is gone as you suggest - I read here the MPI tends to fail to open so hopefully no worries till I get it fixed.

Having found the owners handbook on this site it turns out the fault light I thought was for the water pump was actually the 'Control system for exhaust' light, off to look that up

Yea, this sensor has been faulty for a while. But I am told it could be the fact the tank is so stained the sensor isn't working.

Yep, Landys do need a lot of TLC but there's more nice and simple mechcano type repairs:)

Went for a long drive today, drove the car like I stole it and it all seems fine now. The warning lights gone and the themostat gauge working again - crazy

I suspect there is still an issue that needs resolving, the thermostat/temp sender/expansion tank probably need replacing.
