Extract from EVO about the new Golf R engine

Featured Replies

"Golf R motor is derived from the old EA113 engine from the mk5 Golf GTI, not the EA888 fitted to the new mk6 GTI. Confused? Don’t be, for according to VW Individual it’s merely because the older motor lends itself more readily to tuning."

I was surprised at the above account, as I thought the consensus on here was that the EA888 engine gave more power from tuning than the EA113 engine fitted to the TFSI. I know VW have reinforced the block, put an entirely new alloy cylinder head, uprated the pistons and conrods plus high-pressure fuel injectors. They have also fitted a new turbo that delivers 1.2bar of boost and an uprated intercooler. Based on that I begin to wonder why VW changed the engine to the EA888 and didn't just alter the EA113 for the mk6 chassis.

its not that. if you think of it, if they fitted the new TSi engine, it would have required a new turbo being fitted to make the 260hp they wanted with their performance/safety tolerances that they feel they have to build ontop of that. (hence why VAgs are so strong and tunable)

Instead why not use the uprated k04 version of the TFSi which already runs that power, is an extremely strong block and has all the R&D developed and proven.

However the K04 turbo when fitted to the TSI engine and mapped accordingly yields better gains and performance than the TFSI does. so in the future i think we'll see more.
