Think i need to replace my clutch.

Featured Replies

My clutch has start to slip in 4 & 5 gear.

I've got a VRS, 53 plate & its done 65000 miles.

If i boot it at around 2000 revs, it 'slips' up to about 2500 revs before it bites back in & i get the full torque,

I think this might have happened after my crash (see my other thread) & my car ended up in a ditch, i had to rev the knackers off it to get it out & i think it might have been a little to much for the clutch!! (i wonder if i can also claim this on the insurance!!!! LOL)

Anyway, looking around, a new clutch costs about £180.

From the description I've given, is it only the clutch that needs replacing? If it is - how much labour should a garage cost - 2 hours/3hours etc.

Cheers.

Yeah you will need the clutch and pressure plate and i would get a release bearing too well your having it done , should cost around £80 for fitting depending on the area you get it done

Have you tried mr.clutch? They charged £99 for my mates corsa (supply and fit), I seem to remember someone on here was asking about them recently because they were so ludicrously cheap

Thanks for that, i gave the Bristol branch a ring (probably the closest one to Worcester) & they quoted me £608!!! This didnt include the Hydrualic Releaser which was another £100. Grand total of £708!! inc VAT.

That sounds really steep. They told me that i would need the Dual Mass Flywheel as well. Is this right?

it depends on the condition of the flywheel to be truthfull,

Well, would the flywheel be 'worn'? It seems that its only the clutch thats slipping. Can i just replace the clutch & leave the flywheel?

The flywheel should be ok. You dont chug around at 1500 rpm in 6th gear do you? lol, also, will rattle when out of gear and off the clutch. But they can check the condition when it`s off the car. Clutch can be had for under £150 and around £100 fitting.

if you take it to a good garage they shouldn't rip you off about the flywheel

flywheel wears too being a duel mass unit. I had my clutch done in september and Mr Clutch were the cheapest at just over £600 which included clutch, flywheel, release bearing slave cylinder ect. They were by far and away the cheapest place doing it properly. you may get some garages saying 'yeah mate flywheel will last another 24 months so just sell it on' or that its worn but will be ok ect but i have a conciounse so had the it all replaced and it's under warrenty for the next 2 years/20,000 miles. with regards to being ripped off. I was speaking at great length to the bloke about how they know if the flywheel is worn or not and he was showing me all the charts/tools they use to check it all. Let's be right as well nobody in the motor trade wants to change parts they don't have to at this time of year especially! i'd have no qualms going back to Mr Clutch and i'm always sceptical of being ripped off!

What i didnt like was i was automatically quoted for a new fly wheel, without even knowing the condition.

I think i will opt for just a new clutch as its only done 65000 miles.

mine had done 103k so i suppose i'm in a much further down the line condition of wear. I'd hedge my bets at 65k and say it should be ok but i'd certainly want it checking as if it's knackered it's all gotta come back out!

Mine had do done 147,000miles when checked, was expecting it to be a bit rough, but its sound as a pound. Obviously been looked after and driven properly before i had it.
