Felicia Mpi Stuttering/Misfiring

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Afraid the trusty (usually!) Felicia is having a misfiring issue at the moment. Being quite hard to diagnose...I'll run through the symptoms and hopefully someone will be able to give me some starting points! :)

- Stutters/Kangeroos at gentle cruising speed, ie. 40mph in 4th or 5th, 30mph in 4th. Putting your foot down in the same gear when this happens there's little power. But drop it a couple of gears and boot it and it's fine again.

- Usually manifests itself when it has nearly reached operating temperature

Any starting points you would suggest? The car was serviced about 4 months ago, has a newish lambda sensor, and otherwise has been running fine - despite someone crashing into it :(

seems you have the same issues as I now have (see my post under user bazD) - I've spent the whole weekend to no avail trying to fix, car goes to the garage wed am.

Will post the outcome on here

Baz

One culprit for the stuttering/cutting out during warmup is apparently a dirty MAP sensor - see this post. It seems there have been quite a few posts about what seems to be the same issue recently, but the fact that Favorits and SPi Felicias can do it as well suggests there's more possible causes than just the MAP sensor, as the Mono-Motronic system doesn't have one.

Thanks guys for the quick reply...

Robin - that post sounds very interesting... I reckon I'lll give that a go first as the symptoms do sound similar. What would you recommend I clean the sensor/plug contacts with?

Also... reading more into engine sensors... could it also be a possibility that the MAF sensor needs cleaning?

What Felicia do you have? AFAIK no Felicia has a MAF sensor; the 1.3 MPi has a "thrust" sensor which is actually a MAP and temperature sensor.

It's an MPI... and you're right, ofcourse it doesn't have a MAF... !! I must admit I didn't really look before I posted that, as it's not my car anymore which makes diagnosing a bit more tricky! Judging by further symptoms that my girlfriend has experienced it's sounding even more like the post linked above with the MAP sensor. I think we may have a spare lying around, otherwise I'll give the existing one a good clean and see what happens :)

Well I've replaced the MAP sensor with a used spare, which made no difference... replaced the Crank Position Sensor yesterday and noticed the washer was broken (although I'm not sure if this would realistically have any ill effects)... however it hasn't done it today so time will tell!

Cause of my problems was the crank angle sensor - mounted on the gearbox casing. cost £40 and easy to replace.

Is the crank angle sensor the one under the thermostat housing?

Percy has a grumble every morning & struggles for first half mile then is fine. I did pull the hose of the thermostat & soak gearbox/lambda sensor plug in coolant so been blaming that

Yes the sensor lies under the thermstat (so to speak) but is mounted on the gearbox housing. If nothing else remove and clean it as it may have a build up of dirty on it.

My problem occured once the car was warm not after a first start. I wonder when your fuel filter was last changed ???

Good luck with your issues - Baz

unplug the temperature sensor and see if it makes any difference
