I have a six-year old Fabia 1, 1.2 HTP (i.e. petrol). The engine sometimes loses power and stutters a bit when I (try to) accelerate heavily between about 2000 and 3000 revs. The problem immediately disappears if I down-shift to get more revs. There are no warning lights on. The symptoms are annoying, but nowhere near as severe as when the engine was misfiring due to a bad coil-pack a couple of years ago. It happens regardless of whether the engine is hot or cold, but cannot always be reproduced. The car has been pretty much perfectly reliable since I bought it new, the failed coil-pack being the only problem that required an urgent fix. It has been serviced at the dealer every year, but also had a new cat and exhaust fitted last year at an independent garage following an MOT failure on emissions.

Does anybody know what might be the problem, and is it worth spending money on getting the diagnostic codes read (given that no warning lights are on)? Many thanks for any help.

Look in the VCDS section of the forum, there may be someone near you with VCDS able to hook your car up and check for codes for a few beer tokens (how much do dealer's charge these days? think it's more than £50, just to plug it into a computer, crikey).
