Chassis torsion issue?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am looking for a replacement for my 2007 Octavia and the new Superb seems like a good choice.

However, from two separate owners, I've had reports of chassis torsion (hope this is the right English term, I live in Belgium). Apparently the chassis is not stiff and this results in creaking noises, esp. from doors, when going fast, or over bumps. Particularly present when climbing curbs (which seems to confirm the suspicion).

I know that monocoque designs are supposed to be stiff (chassis is not flexible), so I fear that this in time could result in horrific vibration related problems.

Have you had this problem?

Thank you very much.

We'd usually say "chassis flex" rather than "chassis torsion", but that's a question of native speakers using a semi-colloquial generic term rather than a technical term.

This might sound odd, but are the problems coming from a "sporty" model, with big wheels, low profile tyres, and hard suspension, or from low end models which will have comparitively small wheels, high profile tyres and soft suspension?

For one of them I have the exact details: 16'' alloy wheels, regular suspension.

The other one seems to be on 17''.

Thank you for the clarification on terms.

I am surprised to see your comment about chassis flexing in the new Superb. It is the most rigid car I have ever owned. When I was considering buying the Superb 11, I road tested several different versions. None of them suffered from chassis flex or rattle from interior fittings. I have to ask if your reports are from owners of Mark 1 Superbs? I have no experience of that model, but as it was design some years ago, I am sure that the chassis would not be as strong as the new Superb.

I have had my Superb (on 18 inch wheels) for over 12 months now. I have never experienced any suggestion of the chassis flexing. Neither have I experienced any creaking from the interior fittings. As I said in a previous comment on this site, the only noise I can hear from the interior fittings is a barely audible intermittant clicking sound, which comes from the passenger seat belt fastener. As my wife moves slightly when she is riding in the car, the tongue of the fastener moves very slightly and produces a faint click.

I have sorted out the wife/seatbelt click with a little piece of self adhesive velcro (the soft fuzzy side) attached to the inside of the plastic fitting on the seatbelt near the base of the seat

Mine is 100 times quieter than my previous car, the only thing I can hear in mine is the heater fan faintly whirring

Thanks. I'll try that when I have a moment.

thank you for the feedback - very convincing.

I'll most probably end up ordering one, for me it stands out as a definite best buy in its price range.

Everybody, and I mean everybody that's been in mine has appeared very impressed, and it goes without saying I love it. Get a test drive and take it from there

My V6 Combi is absolutely tight and rigid over all kinds of crappy roads here in Australia. LIke a couple of others in this thread, I agree that the Superb is very rigid and strong. By far the best car that I've owned, including the Lexus IS250 that the Skoda replaced. The Lexus is a great, and beautifully made car, but its chassis is no match for the Superb. The Lexus had plenty of creaks and groans on any road that was not as smooth as glass. Don't listen to the rumours about body flex in the Skoda

No squeaks or rattles over any bumps to report. Everyone that has been in my car has been 100% impressed.

I cant say I have experienced any of the hallmarks of significant chassis flex in the Superb, there will be some flex but nothing that is noticeable.

Now, if they did a convertible that would be different emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Buy a 7 series BMW and don't pay the extra 20k off the mortgage, jezus, how much do some ppl want.

Hey, Skoda build a good car, better than VW and possibly as good if not better than Audi, if you need to ask this sort of thing, take a test drive to find out, I'm sure you won't find anything, but just incase you do, remember it's a 50k car for 25k.

Body Flex? As the windscreen and rear window are bonded to the body, you would expect body flex to pop or break the glass. I am on my third Superb and have never had any problem, Cornish roads are about the worst in the Country for tight turns, steep hills, and, road surface has to be the worst, any flexing would should show up.

I do not know how the Panoramic roof is fitted as my Estate does not have it. I wonder how many Superb owners have had any problems with their windscreens and rear windows apart from stone damage.

Hello, new member here.

I am the person that adso was reffering about.

My Superb is 6 moths old.

I have 2 problems with it:

1. Flywheel tremor in the clutch pedal - from the "famous" wv bimasic flywheel : "they all do the same" , "technological sound" or " normal tremor on transitory regimes of the flywheel" is all i can get from authorised services and dealers - one of the reasons that now i regret not choosing DSG gearbox.

2. Especcialy on the drivers door, but on others aswell (even that more rarely) i have the "squieaky" sound of rubber on small friction. or more acurate is the term "little cracks sound". I can hear them over speed bumps, small bumps or when i get off the side-walk (i park my car on a unused sidewalk).

I suspect that is more of a door problem than chassis problem, but i still wanted some opinions from skoda users. The car si quite long and my problem is found in different degrees in all doors, but drivers door is annoying me and i drive with music so i won't hear it anymore.

the car is normal chassy, 205/55/16 wheels, regular suspension

@spectrum - rear window is not bonded to the body, is mounted on the twin-door system

Now on a Superb Estate after 2 A4 Avants. No contest. The build quality is easily the equal of the Audis, but the standard kit and the attention to detail in the Skoda makes the Audis I have had look very basic indeed.

On third Superb, six years with MkI manual, two years MkII DSG, never had any vibration or problems with flywheel. Reverted to manual on number three, clutch and gearbox as smooth as silk.
