Washer & Electric Window Woes

Featured Replies

Posted regarding my windows not working awhile back, having first ensured the fuses were ok. They worked intermittantly for a bit but now appear to have stopped working at all.

When I get time I'll take the door card off and have a look. Any idea what to look for or fiddle with please?

Someone mentioned it may be the window control unit (?), if it is this how much is it to replace and is it a DIY job?

Secondly, this morning my windscreen washers stopped working. They're not frozen, as the car was garaged all night, I have screenwash in the reservoir and having read the wiper thread- I've checked fuse 15 and it is fine. I'm confused!

I know these little niggles have probably been covered many times before, and I have tried searching for answers, but I'd really appreciate any assistance anyone can offer.

Can you hear the pump working? If so, it may be that the pipes have frozen since you last used the washer and come apart at a joint. Obviously, once popped the washers won't work no matter how warm your car is at night. Pop-off points are here:

As for the windows, try the fuse again or even disconnecting the battery, as this resets the controller. Leave it for a good ten minutes before putting the fuse back or reconnecting the battery. If the electric window controller ('Convenience Unit') has failed, you'll find in Step 10 of this guide:

...identified as the central locking ECU, which is another job it does.

Ref the washers, nice link, but only for the rear washer unit. I read the OP as saying he had a problem with the fronts? In which context, I had mine freeze up once, and a garage will not prevent liquid from freezing, unless it's heated (include lean-tos if there's enough "bleed through" from the house for them to say above 0C. The response was to empty a litre of neat screenwash into the reservoir. Oh and don't say "but I use a mix"; you may be underestimating the effects of a 50mph wind-chill on the nozzles.

Yes, I believe the motor can be heard.

I appreiciate your replies, thank you. I'll pour in plenty of neat screenwash for the washers and diconnect the battery for a good 10mins for the windows and see if that solves it.

I hope so, as the central locking ECU does not sound like a cheap item. Frozen pipes, however, I can cope with for the time being!

Oops, bit of a repost rather than edit there.

If anyone has any other ideas or opinions please post them here, as I'll be willing to try any suggestions to remedy the faults.

(As long as said suggestions make sense, I'll not be doing any naked chicken dances or anything!)

Naked turkey dance, then? :p

Haha, got me there.

To be honest, if it would ensure the problems would desist then I'd give it a bash, as they are particularly irritating.

For now, a few more logical steps noted above seem a better and less pneumonia-inducing prospect.
