Oil Change

Featured Replies

Right i am planning a oil change on my vRS at the weekend, i was wondering if i am worth while changing the oil pick up strainer thingy as i have no idea when it was changed before, how easy is it to do to replace the strainer etc? whats the best grade of oil to use for these engines?

Regards

It's easy enough to do if your handy with tools, just the sump off which will need to re sealed.

10w40 is fine on the 1.8t on fixed servicing.

Why does the oil pick up need changing?

Joe

It gets blocked up with sludge and distrorys the engine

Forgot to do mine last week :( hopefully be ok to march/april time

So i could do this job with a trolley jack fairly easy? Just a few qusetions though how much are the oil pick ups? Or can you just remove the pick up and clean it etc, what is best for resealing the sump? Would i have to remove the sump completly or does it split? Where abouts is the pick up located in the sump?

Ah i see ok. How often do they need to be replaced?

Fairly easy? Depends on your skill set dont it, I can do them but I wouldnt trust our apprentice..lol Its fairly straight forward, 10mm bolts (with a 5mm hex in the head of the bolt so can use either) the two tricky bolts are in the gearbox bell housing, a long ball ended 5mm allen key socket helps here. On a trolley jack is a no no, a pair of axle stands yes its possible. Use the genuine white sealer to seal the sump, make sure its spotless before re assembling. The pick up is at the lowest point of the sump (obviously) and is pretty obvious when the sump is off, cleaning it out will suffice if you have good enough means of cleaning, probably worth buying a new one though. Sump is one piece and has to come off whole.
