Coilpack on its way out?

Featured Replies

I've researched this a fair bit on here and it has all of the symptoms of a coil pack.

The car is revo stage 1, and a de-cat. The chap I bought it off said he'd had to replace one coilpack before and gave me a spare.

My question is;- Can a coilpack show symptoms that it's on its way out? In the bad weather last week the car "kicked" a couple of times as it idled rough, and the CEL light flashed. Yesterday it did the same but ran badly for the last 30 seconds of my journey. (Drove and soudned just like it was on 3 cyclinders)

I got my tools out, grabbed a torch and continued to get to my coil packs. The problem was that by the time I did this the car was ticking over fine again!

Can coilpacks do this....everything tells me that it is my coilpack but I just want it to go properly. Or should I be looking at something else for the problem?

Thanks in advance

It either sounds like a coilpack or a bad earth somewhere. Have a look at them all and see which version they all are. You may be able to then make an educated guess as to which one is failing.

Under the plug there will be a part number ending in a letter. If it ends in G, H, J, or L, then these are known for failing. If they have either E, R, or D, these are the newest ones and should be OK. (E type are the bolt down ones made by hitachi).

Thanks for that mate, definately helps a bit.

So this means that coilpacks can do this, and show signs that they are on their way out?

Yeah. When mine went first of all was just idling erratically at the lights a few days later was running on somewhere between two and three cylinders.

Fault codes 17763 17766 17769 Coilpacks Have they all definitely gone?

This has happened to me a few times now and never managed to find out which one it is. I've just found this on a TT Forum.

http://www.tt-forum....hp?f=2&t=125202

My question is; Does this mean three coilpacks have gone? If so which three? Could I have disturbed them when I've popped them off to find out which one had gone? OR could it be a bad earth?(I can see one earth that fastens onto the head, but not sure if they all run off one earth?

The codes may of come up because you disconnected the coil whilst the engine was running,id clear all the codes & see what comes back up,if it is your coil pack id recomend that you replace all 4 as i had one fail on my mk1 octy vrs & just replaced the faulty one & a month later another one failed on a busy main road! if you cant afford to replace all four then buy a spare & keep it in your car to change when the next one fails(which it will!) :)

Thanks for that, makes sense that it would bring up codes after I'd unplugged them for a second (Don't know why I hadn't thought of that!) I've reset the codes now, and will see what happens if and when the CEL light comes on again.

Are the specific numbers for specific coilpacks? e.g;

17763 - Coil 1

17766 - Coil 2

17769 - Coil 3

If so, I presume Coil 1 would be on the left as you look at the engine?

That's what mine seems to be doing.....coming down the slip lane this morning I got up near the redline, and it revved pretty smoothly.

Cruising down the motorway the CEL light suddenly started flashing and the car ran rough for about 10 seconds....I slowed down to about 60mph and the car started running fine! I just want the coilpack to break so I can replace it!

Any thoughts on which coilpacks the Fault codes refer to (17763 - Coil 1...............17766 - Coil 2................17769 - Coil 3) Is this right?

Just replace all 4 as sooner or later its going to fail & let you down. If its over xmas in the snow you wont be happy!

You could try removing one by one by replacing with a known good one.

or just pull each coilpack , if the car still stays the same eratic ticker then it is possibly that one that is causing it as you are getting no change.

If the car runs worse then chances are it is not that coilpack.
