Strange noise from offside rear

Featured Replies

Might have a problem with my Vrs, heard a horrible scuffing/scraping noise from the rear drivers side, worse under braking on the way home last night, all looks ok, tyre, suspension level etc, but was even worse this morning, so I’ll maybe try & wash the car tomorrow (powerwash the wheel/arch etc), in case it is just crap stuck somewhere in the wheel/brake setup.

Don't think it's a bearing issue...any other suggestions. Really hoping it just crap or ice or the like stuck somewhere. Otherwise I fear an expense coming at the worst time !

Could well be something (stone etc) got behind the brake shield - lots of people have had this, including myself. May clear itself, but if not, take the wheel off and have a look.

My car made a similar noise the other day, I can only describe it as the noise a radiator sometimes makes when it is cold and suddenly a load of hot water gets pumped through it, that bonging noise if you know what I mean.

I presumed that it was some grit from the road rattling around in the brakes somewhere, seems to have sorted itself out now!

Probably similar to your problem!

Cheers guys...will be checking it out in daylight tomorrow...will report back...hoping it's just grit/a stone.

To echo what's been said above - if it's a really horrible metallic squealing noise that makes you embarrassed every time the car moves - it's probably a stone stuck between the disc and the backing plate. Seems to happen occasionally to Octavias. You should be able to free it without taking the wheel off - just push the back plate away from the disk and wait for the click of the stone dropping out. Done it a couple of times in the car park at work, when Security gave me funny looks as I drove in :D

Looks like it was maybe just some crap stuck in there. It wasn't a loud piercing noise, more a grumble/drone on slowing...anyway washed both cars at the weekend, a thorough job with the powerwasher & just wonder if it was crap or the fact the braking mechanism hadn't got a good clean for while. It's not gone entirely, but does sound much better today. Fingers crossed & thanks for the replies.

Very occasionally I get a sound like the exhaust is dragging along the road but it can be months before it happens again, checked everything cannot find out what causes it

I experienced this whilst doin the nursery run this morning, must admit at first I did brick it!

After reading what I have on here though it's made me feel better :)

The noise lasted about 30 seconds, not heard it since though.

Exactly what mine sounded like, I thought the exhaust mount must have broken and it was dragging on the ground - turned out to be a stone behind the brake disc shield, fell out of its own accord after a few hundred yards.

I had the same issue while driving and thought something was dragging along, I stopped to check and could see nothing wrong and when I moved away the sound stopped. The road had lots of loose stones on it so I guessed one of them had stuck in the rear brakes.

  • 2 months later...

I have exactly this problem on my Scout. The stones did not drop out and the garage has so far removed 2 this month.

I have had this type of noise after leaving the car standing for a few days with wet brake disks (salted roads make them rust very quickly). Soon wears off with braking but not on short trips necessarily.

I do still get noise, worse after the car has sat for a couple of days, like over a wet weekend. Just accepting that it's maybe just one of those 'features' ! (& I don't do any long trips)
