Octavia TDI hard to start when hot

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I had a similar problem with my 56 plate Octavia 1.9 PD.

It would start fine when cold, however once it was warm and I tried to restart it, it would make a hell of a shudder & thump before cutting out.

It didn't do it all the time, which made it even more frustrating.

I did a bit of research on this site as well as the VW / Audi forum.

Two things can cause these symptoms. A faulty starter motor or a tired battery. Apparently a warm engine requires more power to start than a cold engine. Sounds bizarre, I know!

I changed my battery and this has solved the problem.

Hope this helps.

I had changed my battery an year back which alleviated the problem, but it has resurfaced so it must be something else could be starter as you have pointed out.

Not sure if those with the problem are doing this but I find (as it says in the owners manual) if I let it idle for a while (10-30 seconds) when I'm going to turn the engine off it helps restart when warm.

That sounds like an old BMW ('96 520i) which I had. If you stopped the car straight away when it was thoroughly warm, then when you came to start it, there would be too much fuel left available, so it was like trying to start a flooded engine, so I think the way to cure it was to let it idle as you have said, which then gets the extra fuel burnt off. The BMW was also a very quick starter on the coldest of mornings.

Mind you, the other fix about replacing the battery sounds good as well, because an old battery will be charged up in the morning (having rested) and then discharge slightly when using all the electrics.

This seller has three different wiring sets for VAG engines to warm engine start problem elimination. It depend on what kind of  engine coolant temperature sensor your car has. All you need to do with these wiring kits is to just plug them in and that is it.

Hi all, the hot start diesel problem is so frustrating especially after spending 100's on Starter motors, flywheels, clutches, temperature sensors and you still have exactly the same problem.

I've read many posts describing a pronounced "THUD" when attempting a hot start. This is possibly fuel starvation.

My advice is this ..... before you go buying expensive parts you don't even need.

"Remove the intercooler rubber hose and see if there is a build of oil in the pipe."

If there is a build up of oil in all probability your turbo is leaking on the induction side which will in turn affect hot starting through excess carbon build up causing under fuelling rather than over fuelling during a hot start.

Cleaning out the throttle body and a recon turbo will solve the problem.

Hot start problem still present however starts far better than it did after copious amounts of oily soot removed when renewing turbo. Good news i've solved the problem by wrapping the starter motor in heat shield material secured with 2 big jubilee clips
