Are 17s too small?

Featured Replies

I'm asking this in here as I think the Mk2 people are most familar with the shape and size of the car and personal opinions can be made relating to my car.

I currently have some eighteen inch RS6 wheels on it and I love them but they've gone a bit square due to the rigours of Central London and so forth, not a lot of rubber between rim and road (225/35) you see.

I have a really bad back, plus trapped nerves and find the low profile a bit jarring.

And what 17 inch wheels would you go for? Thanks :)

And of course, the point of this post... Are 17"s too small?

I have gone from 17's on my last vRS to 18's on this one & found v.little difference in ride. Incidentally, the vRS comes with 225/40/18 tyres as std.

As for 17's being too small-it's personal choice tbh-they'll fit no problem.

Maybe trade it in for a scout.... :giggle:

17's on my vRS, I also suffer with back problems. I dont feel any issues with the 17's running on 225/45/17

I don't think it's a matter of size.It's a matter of off-set.If it were ET 45,let's say,it would look just fine.

I'm in the same position - looking for a VRS and have so far only been looking for 18's...

Then a dealer said to me - can you really tell the difference, they are the same design...

17s look so small on mk2s sorry.

a "long spoked" rim can look like an 18" rim even though it is 17", try to get rims with the spokes all the way to the edge of the rim and they will be fine!

I've got 17's running on 225/45/17 . They ,Pallas 5 spoked, look fine, fairly easy to clean and keep the car off the ground. With the sports suspension there is not much air in the wheel arches.

I'd prefer steel wheels and plastic nave plates to take the kerbing etc.. One wheel has been damaged twice already.

The 17" Pegasus alloys look spot on, the slim 5 spoke setup makes them look bigger than they are. 5 spoke seems to be the optimum number. I had the 17" Sputnik 7(?) spoke alloys and they looked tiny, the high offset didn't help either.

Nik, don't forget to get them sold if you are looking for new wheels mate

I have a set of Pegasus sitting in the shed, was going to sell them, but think Ill stick winter tyres on them for next year....

My pegasus are in bits with the 360,000kms I have on them. Are yours in good nick and what type of money would it take to get them from you. I'm in Ireland so there would be no hassle of boxing and shipping.

18's should be running a tyre profile of 40% of the tyre width.

Huge bumps on 30mm Eibachs and 225/40/R18's give mine a good thumping, its usually quite forgiving on uneven roads and generally bumpy roads.

Improved considerably after replacing the shocks though.
