Why would AM be crystal clear and FM be non-existent?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

AM radio is perfect on the car. But the FM radio is really terrible......

Could water ingress in the aerial base cause this? What is the most cost effective way of sorting this out???

I am on the verge off changing the headunit for an aftermarket one...

i'm no expert...far from it, but I thought AM and FM operate over different ranges and in normal radios you find two antennas. One which is external, the type you can see and extends outwards which controls FM. The antenna for AM is internal. I tend to listen to AM a lot and find that I dont need the big aerial to get good reception.

Perhaps the same principal for the car head unit exists where your external aerial on the roof isn't connected up properly or is broken resulting in bad FM signal, but your AM signal is good because the actual receiver is located elsewhere or within your head unit? if this is the case as i'm surmising then the problem is likely to be in a connection or on the aerial.

I personally would check your aerial is firmly seated and perhaps check if the contacts need cleaning and make sure everything is hooked up correctly to the head unit.
