snow socks

Featured Replies

hi, i'm trying to find an alternative to winter tyres due to unavailability, my fabia has size 205/45/16, does anyone know if i could get away with slightly different size snow socks, i can't find any my size but there are some 205/40/16, would these or any other size work? (I'm driving to Germany to stay with the in-laws for xmas and i'm hearing that german police are having zero tolerance for drivers without winter tyres, not sure what to do) , thanks

There are chains available on ebay in your size http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/9mm-Pair-Snowchains-Snow-Chains-205-45-x-16-/380297119337?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item588b798669

There are also the Michelin easy grip which are like a studded fibre net that goes round your wheel. Im sure I have seen them in your size, and perhaps they are elasticated and there is a pssibility of using the next nearest size on your car.

Have you not got a set of steel wheels? Im sure you can pick some used ones up quite cheap with tyres. and hopefully they will be a more common size for snow socks, michelin easy grip or chains or even just a cheaper size for winter tyres.

Go to www.autosock.co.uk, and click on their size guide and you will see that they have the size you require, for a 205/45/16 tyre, you will need item number AS605, which costs £64.95,

hope this is of some help.

Have snow socks in the 205/45 R16 size for our Fabia II Elegance and by chance they also fit the SE 195/55 R15 :) However were awaiting winter wheels in the 195 size as the snow socks are no good if you cannot move the car, as we had last week  Front wheels spun through the thick ice leaving my wife 'stuck in a rut' :giggle:

My link Gone up a bit since we bought ours in October; more profiteering by the internet firms :swear:

You will find SNOW SOCKS "SOLD OUT" everywhere

However, VAUXHALL have announced for safety they are providing SNOW SOCKS and whisper "they have them in stock"

YOU will not find these on GOOGLE call your local dealer

I do not know the legality of socks if the germs want snow tyres though

I'm in Germany at the moment and the law is quite clear. If there is snow or ice on the ground you must be running a tyre marked M+S (Mud and Snow), preferably with a little snowflake in a triangle. Snow socks won't wash sadly. Most all-season tyres are M&S marked though and those are available in the UK at the moment.

Mytyres (who I personally won't use as they seem intent on not accepting my credit cards) have Kumho and Hankook 205/45/16 full winter tyres in stock.

I have a front set of winter snow socks which fit 205/45/16. i bought these last year. used once. I now have winter tyres which i bought before prices were hiked up.

I didnt think snow socks were legal in germany though.

The motorways will be clear in Germany and its no good fitting snow socks at hih speeds, they are only to get you out of the deep snow on local roads. You'll be putting them on and off regularly, it'll be real pain keep starting and stopping to put them on. The only satisfactory answer is to fit winter/all season tyres. Why not buy them in Germany, they'll be plentiful there.
