Headlight motors

Featured Replies

I thought it was about time something else went wrong.....! My passenger side motor no longer adjusts the beam angle. If I take out the light cluster am I likely to be able to clean anything up to make it work, or is it just one of those things I need to learnt to live with (or replace something if I can find up a smacked up Octy in the scrap yard?).

Looking at this thread (http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/137504-adjustment-headlight-motor-octavia-1-8t/) it looks like I can just unscrew the motor, although I guess this operation is much easier to be carried out on the kitchen table than bent over the car in a dark garage.....

I had to replace my motors a few years back. One of them decided to have a spaz attack and randomly adjust, while the other just failed at a similar time.

I managed to get them working again temporarily, by opening up the motor casings and firing some WD40 in there. But it didn't last long. The problem is the little plastic gear starts to spin on the motor shaft I think.

You have to remove the headlight, but that only takes 5mins. Then you just unscrew the motor from the reflector and your good to go. Only thing I'd say is be very very careful when screwing the motor unit back onto the reflector. Being weak plastic it doesn't like being screwed into many times, and you'll soon lose the threads. The job should only take you 30mins.

One of mine conveniently went while I was in Austria! Luckily I had a set of torx bits in the car, and there was a Skoda dealer in town. Funnily enough I used my grans kitchen to fix it that time!

I think the motors are like £25ish each....

mmmm, I might source a replacement motor from a dealer ( ) and do the change over Christmas....

However if the plastic gear is just spinning on the motor shaft, then maybe a small dab of glue would help secure it, and I could save £25, and spend that in the pub instead  Or is the motor shaft one half of a worm drive, and thus my glue suggestion would not work....

To be honest I can't really remember! I just remember that the one that stopped all together was due to something spinning on the motor shaft. Sorry!

They are pretty basic inside, so you'll soon figure it out.

The other one would constantly adjust up and down, and I could hear it whirring away from inside the car.

I sat in the car park this morning and my passenger one does not move (and no noise) the drivers one is well behaved. I'll pop the assembly out and have a look before I actually purchase a replacement motor.....

Will take some pictures when I do it.

If you have xenons then the motors retail at 50 quid, you may be able to get some discount from James @ Allams?

Just standard (aka rubbish) headlights in mine with uprated bulbs

Lucky you then! You only need the cheap ones!

Hi, one of mine stopped working and I managed to buy a complete new headlamp on ebay for less than buying a motor and then fitted the motor in -situ. I took the old one apart and it was burnt out inside on the pcb so no quick way of fixing.

p.s mbames - your write up and pics of cleaning your turbo is great :thumbup:
