Key cutting

Featured Replies

my Fun has 2 keys, One for the doors and another for the Ignition,

i have only 1 ignition key so wouldn't mind a spare, i saw the local Timpson does car keys so asked, they said it would be £75 due to the micro chips etc,

Not sure if the Felicia Fun has a chipped key, but i would imagine the original car key [the one i use for doors] would still have the original chip in it so i woulnt need a chipped key, [does that make sense??]

where can i get a key cut cheep? or how easy is it to swap ignition barrels with a scrap car?

I'm sure I'll get told if I'm wrong here (I think I've been paying attention though ;-) )

yes the keys are chipped, apparently the system is a Thatcham Cat 1. My Timpsons wanted £60 to cut a key and clone the chip inside it. Skoda want £120

I recall that swapping the barrels is not a quick or easy job, and you'd need to swap the transponder over from the original barrel, but you'd still only be left with one functioning key. The alternative is new keys / barrels etc which is £90 from Jorily. But the new ones would need to be re-coded to match the ECU. (or vice-versa)

Skoda will do barrels to match the keys for £20 each - takes 6 weeks to come through, as it's a VW order von Deutschland. that would match the doors to the ignition (or just replace driver's barrell), but you'd still need Timpsons to do a 2nd key.

I don't think "cheap" will feature easily in the solution here. :-(

Adding to what Alex said, how straightforward it is depends on whether you have the 4-digit SKC number that came with the original keys - this is needed in order to reprogram the immobiliser to accept new transponders. If not, you'll need to either get the reprogramming done at a Skoda dealer, or find someone nearby with the right kit to recover the code - have a look in the VAG-com/VCDS members list for someone who has VAGTacho as well. If you do have the code, you'll just need VAG-com/VCDS to match the new key.

I'd imagine that when the ignition barrel was changed the immobiliser was reprogrammed for the new keys so will no longer recognise the transponder in your door key (this is the case with mine, which is in the same situation), but it's not impossible that chips were swapped then so you may possibly be lucky there. The cheapest option is to get the blade cut on an empty transponder key shell (about £10), nick the chip out of the door key, then tackle the coding issue. The transponders themselves,if you do need a new one, are simple fixed-code ones that only cost about £3, but there are a couple of different IDs depending on the age of the vehicle.

Alternatively for the no-programming approach, you'd need to find a scrap 1.6 with keys and take the ignition barrel, ECU and immobiliser box (and probably reader coil) as a matched system - may as well take the front door locks to match while you're at it. The hard part, again as Alex mentioned, is for obvious reasons undoing the shear bolts that hold the ignition barrel/steering lock assembly to the column. It would probably be a lot simpler to just swap the whole steering column if you're taking this approach.

hang on.. no, the immo 1 system in a felicia only has one fixed key code, all the keys have the same code...

and fwiw i would just go to timpsons and a key copy made of your original one rather than messing about with changing locks or barrels about

That's what I did with mine. was the cheapest, easiest, quickest and least "f?ckupable" solution.

Which code are you referring to there? The comment I made was because all the transponder datasheets and application listings I spent ages cross-referencing to make sense of it all list ID33 type for '95-'99 Felicias and ID48 type for '99 on (for normal programming). And Ross-tech say a non-integrated Immo 1 box can store up to 4 key codes, so I don't see why the keys would need to be complete clones of each other either if that's what you're implying.

Hmm, I feel I may have to delve back into all that incredibly tedious information to refresh my memory...

edit: well, that's got me nothing but thoroughly confused now :(
