Sidelights

Featured Replies

Hi all

Apologies if this may have been asked before but I could find anything on my searches.

I have a 2010 Octavia VRS and just noted that my sidelight do not come on whatever.

The DRLs work fine, dim when headlights on.

However when I have the light set to auto ONLY the headlight come on, no sidelights come on.

When I select the sidelight function the DRLs stay on but the sidelight do not come on.

When I select the headlight function the headlights come on, DRLs stay on but again no sidelights...?

The car does not give me any error messages.

Any ideas people? Am stuck and I know my local dealer wont be interested

Thanks in advance.

Your headlights are a standard unit, fitted to all Octavia types

The sidelights are diabled on the vRS...in favour of dimmed DRL's

BTW your sidelights wont come on in 'Auto' because on the continent they are used for parking only...Very sensible too IMO

On the VRS the DRLs act as the sidelights. So even though there are bulbs in the sidelights they are not connected up and will not work on the VRS.

Thanks for that

At least I am not going mad trying to get them to work.

Though confused why Skoda do not have option to have sidelights/headlights and DRLs running at the same time.

Would give a lot more light onthe road.

Are the sidelight actually wired up and if so can they be activated so they turn on as well as the DRLs?

I do think they are wired at all so can not be activated as far as I am aware. Sidelights hardly put any light out so you are not really missing much by not having them on. In fact with headlights on you will not even know if the sidelights are on or off.

DRL's are designed to be used in conditions that do not warrant normal lights on, i.e. during day light hours only with good visibility.

You should still use your side and dipped headlights in the same way as you did before DRL's were introduced.

If the DRL's stayed on at night then they would dazzle, hence they dim when acting as sidelights.

Remember you have no rear lights on when DRL's are on so you still need to remember to turn your lights on when neccessary.

I've not heard of anyone who has managed to enable the 5W side light bulbs in the headlight on the vRS, though I reckon it will be possible somehow!

Side note:

Although not illegal in the UK...You should never drive on sidelights alone.

Your visibility to other road users is seriously diminished!!

Sidelights are for parking, only on if ignition is off, when ignition is on DRL's come on, not sidelights.

Sidelights are for parking.

Sorry, I have to disagree.

Side lights as per the Highway Code are perfectly legal and safe to use in certain conditions, hence there being a specific position on the headlight switch for this setting.

Side lights aren't for parking, parking lights are for parking. Ignition off, indicator on = parking lights.

The Highway Code is old and antiquated. Recommending driving at night on a lit road with only side lights on would be foolish.

There are those who say that if the conditions allow for lights then it should be dipped headlights only. However there are occasions during sunrise and sunset where dipped headlights are simply overkill and side lights are perfectly adequate.

A matter of opinion of course.

In an ideal world all cars would have fully working and correctly aligned headlights. No one would drive with front or rear fogs on when conditions do not warrant them, drivers would not rely on the auto setting and feel that they should never need to manually turn their lights on in the rain and they would know that there are no rear lights on with DRL's.

Still I think the Audi / Mercedes / vRS LED DRL's look great. On the motorway you can see them coming from a long way away.

The Police currently run a few Octavia vRS's near me, the DRL's make it much easier to spot them :giggle:

I agere sidelights are for driving, and parking.what I meant was SKODA have them set like this if you have DRL's fitted ,not that I think this is a good idea!!!I
