sokda felica Front wiper not working :(

Featured Replies

Hi ,

I have joined the site in hope there is a lot af very clever people out there that can help me, and hopefully save me a trip to the garrage so close to christmas.

My N reg skoda felica Glxi has been a little beautie, i bought it in August for £285 with 12 months MOT, only needed to have the sunroof sealed down. I am very pleased with my little red cherry bomb. But yesterday, after defrosting my car my front wiper did not work, althought the back does. The motor sounds, but no movement from the arms. I have checked the fuse as i thought that would be the problem. fuse changed and no joy. A chapp at work had a wee look and said he got the wipers to work then they stoped :( He suggested i put some WD40 on the arm joint as it could be siezed/froze? I will try this in the morning and hope it works, but if anyone has any ideas that could help before i have to go to the garrage....which at this time of the year i would rather avoid!

Thanks in advance for your help :)

Karle :)

Have you tried lifting the wiper arms clear of the windscreen & then turning them on with them pointing up in the air, Karle?

If they don't turn when operated like this & you can hear the motor, you may have stripped the splines on the drive (freezing to windscreen can do that)

Oh yeah...& we normally call them Skoda's...... ;)

Lol to that!

Ok, the splines are the little grooves that lock the wiper arms to the drive mechanism. The thick end of the wiper arms have a hole in them with little grooves round the edge of the hole. Those grooves match up with the grooves on the drive mechanism. If you go to the thick end of the wiper arm, you'll see it's got a black plastic cap on it. Flip it up with a screwdriver & you'll see it's got a nut under it. That nut forces the arm down to keep the splines locked together. (the splines are a taper fit) If the splines have worn, they'll be riding over each other instead of locking together. If that's the case, it's usually the wiper arm splines that have worn.

You can probs get an arm or 2 from a breakers for a coupla quid. To get the arm off, undo that nut whilst holding the arm firmly (they're usually a 13mm or 10mm nut, and it's best to use a ring spanner). Then you need to get a big flat screwdriver blade under the arm as near to spline as you can get a give it a wiggly lever! :whew:

:wait: If you wanna put a cloth on the edge of the bonnet to lever against it'll be nicer for the paint :peek:

They go back on easy if you just gently line the wiper arms up and give then a little push down, the nut will do the work when you tighten it :)

:wait::wait: Don't tighten the nut up too much till you've run the wipers with you sitting in the drivers seat & made sure they're covering the correct area. It's not much fun pulling over on a rain soaked hard shoulder cos your wiper is thrashing around near your drivers door cos you've put it back on in the wrong position in a hurry!

Hi Simon,

Just to update you, still no wipers :'( I tried to have a go, but was too girly and cold. So smiled sweetly and had the guy at the garage look at it, turns out it is the wiper motor that has gone. I have sourced a second hand one form a scrappy for £21.95 and that is winging it's way to me as i speak, so hopefully by the new year i should have wipers that work ;)

Thanks for your help :)

Karle
