Provided you have standard brakes you'd be better off getting some 15" wheels and fitting 185/55/15,195/50/15 or 195/55/15s. Even allowing for the cost of a set of secondhand 15" alloys it will work out cheaper than getting a set of 205/45/16s, besides which a higher profile tyre with greater compliance is better in the snow and ice. I have a set of Avon CR85s in 195/50/15 and they are awesome in this weather.

Running 195/50/16's here (basically the same rolling radius as 205/40/16) on a bunch of steel spare wheels I bought last year. Just superb really. The grip available is quite staggering.

Yes, I'll be the third to agree, winter tyres have made this snow relatively bearable!

I would whole heartedly and fully recommend them to anyone.

They don't stop you getting stuck behind other people without winter tyres though!

Got some 185s on mine on some old Audi wheels. They are bloody amazing. Check ebay if you've trouble sourcing them - I found my local garage on there selling them and just drove along to get them fitted.

I have them and they worked well today as drove from kent to hampshire and back again. Well worth the investment. Saw loads of careless drivers on the m25 and m3 today and it was downright scary watching drivers doing speeds of 80mph(mainly this evening when snow had melted) where there's signage marked on the m25 stating "skid risk". Even worse as there's also speed cameras in place and I did see them flash. How can people be so stupid. They struggled to go up hills when it snows yet are willing to speed excessively when there's risks of skidding.

coincidently I was on LBC radio a couple of hours ago discussing winter tyres with Nick Abbott. Hopefully people listened to what I said and will take note for next year.
