Erratic fuel capacity

Featured Replies

I can't work this out at all, though I have put my 'flame proof' suit on as it really does sound like a dumb-ass query.. :giggle:

Take a day like yesterday, looked to be around a quarter of a tank in there but thought I'd fill her ready for a long journey Monday. I start filling and it happily guzzles up to £53!!

The fill before this, she was in the red yet cut out accepting fuel at £47. Stopped for a minute and attempted to fill again £47 and a bit was the lot.

The Golf had a capacity and that was that but this seems to change every week, in fact I never manage to get the gauge to read full its always just over half when it won't let me fill anymore and is normally around the £47 mark, but yesterday the gauge has gone right the way round to the right for the first time, confused.com :o

Maybe the price of fuel went up :giggle: If the price of fuel stayed the same, then that is an extra £6, and at current prices that must be about an extra 5 litres.

The fill-stop sensor on the nozzle from the pump can be affected by the angle in which it is inserted into the filler hole, which can affect how quickly the pump will shut off. I can generally get an extra £2+ in mine once it has first clicked off but filling at a slower rate.

As you don't normally get the gauge on the dash to show full, that again suggests "user" issues, as you have just proved you can get more fuel in, and the gauge to read to the max. It is a long time since I have filled a petrol car but, but I can remember when I used to fill one of our lease Focus's at work, that was a right b!tch to get full. The diesel one was much easier (larger nozzle and hole :giggle: )

Ahaaa, Maybe that's it?

it really does vary from one week to the next, maybe its the nozzle then?

I can fill mine to the brim and the gauge will never read more than 3/4?!

In your case the fuel sender is maybe damaged. I believe can recalibrate it via vagcom, and I am sure I have read that people have done that in the past. There was one bloke, who iirc did this and then ran out of fuel several times  However the damage may be a simple case of the float getting jammed, or I guess the resistance side of it not working correctly.

Could be something to do with the 4x4 having two fuel tanks - 63 litre capacity over 55 litres normally perhaps??? Mines a bit erratic so basically never let it get down to the yellow light if I can avoid it

See this post for some handy 4x4 difference's

Interestingly, I have gauged my maximum capacity at around £43 from in the red, its been like that for years..No matter what angle I shove the petrol nozzle at its always around that mark, but today guess where I stooped £67!!! Its never done that, ever, ever someone please make sense of this, its a completely got me stumped! :S
