Faster Winter Warm Up

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I give here some tips for faster warm up and consequently, fuel savings.

Starting from cold in the morning or after leaving work, for example:

1) Garage the car if you can.

2) Scrape snow and ice off all windows manually i.e. don't rely on heated rear screen and heater.

3) Don't leave engine idling, it's bad for modern engines.

4) Switch heating to re-cycle. Air in car is rapidly warmer than bringing in air from outside.

5) Switch off the air conditioning.

6) Leave fan off. Heater radiator will actually act in reverse and cool the radiator water to start with.

7) Turn heat down.

8) As soon as you see the temperature gauge move off zero you can begin to turn everything up again; don't leave re-cycle on.

Some of you my be experiencing conditions that may not permit all the tips to work for you.

I had engine up to temperature this morning in well under four minutes.

Fortunately this icy weather does not cause window misting to be a problem, but in other conditions it will be necessary to vary the use of these tips.

Hope you find this useful, however ridiculous it may seem at first.

Regards

EXCELLENT POST its -11 here and over a foot of snow so its handy tipemoticon-0148-yes.gif

the heating doesn't use extra fuel

leaving the air recirculation on just mists up the windows with the stale air

i have no garage at work, no garage to park in at home

the rear heated screen is actually a lot faster than clearing ice/frozen snow by hand

safety is no. 1 so leaving the engine running to warm up and clear the windows is a small price to pay

i have a better tip, cover the car or at least the wind screen overnight

Just to put you right.

Extending the warm up period does use more fuel.

Air re-circulation is only needed for under 4 mins and does not cause misting in this freezing weather.

Using heated rear screen definitely uses more fuel.

Leaving the engine running is not faster than driving off as stated on P90 of the Fabia Manual.

Clearing ice and snow from all windows using de-icer and scraper is faster than using the heated window and clearing all windows is a legal requirement.

Ignore the advice, no problem for me, but don't post incorrect advice.

Merry Christmas.

the heated window will melt the ice, you can't even scrape the ice off by hand if it's frozen solid

air recirculation in my experience does mist up the windows

as said safety is no. 1 so i don't mind putting on the heated rear screen, that's what it's designed for

Sorry Fabia55, Tony's advice is bang on. I agree safty first...& that means scraping all windows...yes you can scrape ice off it's frozen solid...that's why they call it ice! ;) ...then get in start the car & drive off.

You Vrs guys are really posh. "Temperature gauge" what's that :dull: Still a very good and accurate post Tony!

what i do....

knock it on for 2 mins

fill 2l bottle with warm water

throw it everywhere

hop in and boost it untill its nice and toasty

job done

I hope your oil gets up to temp quicker than the coolant and well before you start boosting all over lol. Otherwise i can see things wearing out faster.

1) Garage the car if you can.

do this and most of your problems are over.

2) Scrape snow and ice off all windows manually i.e. don't rely on heated rear screen and heater.

Poor advice - better to use a kettle of warm (not hot) water and wipers. It will take the chill off the glass and assist in reducing the window re-icing as you start driving. (particularly on the inside from your breath).

3) Don't leave engine idling, it's bad for modern engines.

Who cares? Largely old wives tale based on internet forums regurgitating the same old stuff.

4) Switch heating to re-cycle. Air in car is rapidly warmer than bringing in air from outside.

Yes but it does usually cause the windows to mist up and ice internally if the screen is very cold. Can lead to loss of visibilty alarmingly quickly - been there, done that, etc etc

5) Switch off the air conditioning.

The air conditioning will switch itself off - they have a temperature sensor to prevent operation below about 5 deg C.

6) Leave fan off. Heater radiator will actually act in reverse and cool the radiator water to start with.

Mixed bag of advice. Yes blowing ultra cold air doesn't do anything except make you feel colder but working in reverse? Hmm I wont comment on that gem of dubious pinglish

7) Turn heat down.

Yes if you want to give the engine the priority - no if you you want to feel warm, heat the cabin and glass and have a safer driving environment, whack the heater on.

8) As soon as you see the temperature gauge move off zero you can begin to turn everything up again; don't leave re-cycle on.

Concentrate on the road. My car is not fitted with an engine temperature gauge.

OP - Good intentions but .....

i was joking

but 50% of power is alright after a few minutes after all diesel's need revved to warm them up otherwise it will be cold for eternity :giggle:

Why not just jump on a pre-warmed bus to work? :giggle:

Why not just jump on a pre-warmed bus to work? :giggle:

Give me a cold car ANY day of the week compared to being sat on a bus!

Why not just jump on a pre-warmed bus to work? :giggle:

the bus's engine may be warmed up, but the passenger seating area are still cold
