Sticky Electric Windows

Featured Replies

Noticed a problem with the leccy windows on my Felly Magic. They go down fine but going back up again they sometimes stick, and rebound back down, or just stick completely. A few jabs on the button forces the windows back up eventually. The windows go back up about half way before they stick..Your help is appreciated..

Amusingly, the handbook basically says they might do that in winter, and to overcome it by hitting the button repeatedly (less than 5 seconds between presses), so it sounds like it shouldn't be too big a worry.

As a general tip for stiff windows, based on my experience with other cars, you might be surprised at how much of a difference a good thorough clean of the insides of the window seals and channels can make.

I was thinking about getting some duck oil, and giving the channels a good oiling..Sunroof has started to drip around the hinge points too. Me & the FiL will take the roof out and have a butchers on Christmas day..Still has the manufacturers handbook for the sunroof too.. A Vermeulen Hollandia tilt/removable..

Not sure if it's quite the same, as my sunroof has a Britax flippy handle mechanism rather than the wheel type all other Felicias seem to have, but with mine the problem was that the rubber seal had lifted out of its channel slightly at the front corners (I suspect the opening/closing action of the sunroof doesn't help in this respect) and a load of muck had collected in the resulting gap stopping it from sealing properly and allowing water to get in between the bottom of the seal and the frame. I ended up pulling the whole seal off to scrape all the grot out (and treat the rubber to some magic Fairy liquid). The original seal has a bead of mastic underneath it - this ideally needs replacing too, as the rubber on its own even when properly fitted can still leak a little if there's enough rain (nowhere near as bad as it was, though).

I had a Britax (tilt-then-slide) on a Renault Clio. I ended up spending a couple of hours taking the whole thing out, cleaning it etc, then putting back together, but using some Drain and Gutter sealant from B&Q before screwing it back together. It never quite goes off, so stays flexible, probably for more than the life of the car; ;)

No problem. The car before this Felly was a P reg pile of junk pretending to be a Clio RT, and the sunroof was mastic'd shut by a previous owner, using about 3 tubes of the stuff. Still leaked though when it absolutely tipped it down. Other than the sticky windows and the odd drip from the roof, the car is spanking compared to the Clio, and driving up unlit country roads at OMG oclock in the morning with the front fogs on..Brilliant :)

Lol, mine was an "edition" of some sort (Oasis I think), had funky coloured seats, but it did serve a purpose, came for free and sold for £300 18 months later, so not bad. Usually they leaked through block drain channels from the factory sunroof, or where the surround's seal had shrunk. Once I'd sealed mine, it didn't leak again and still opened and closed a treat. :) Might have been a steaming pile of French shyte made of paper mache, but it was easy to fix :-)

However straying back on track........I had a Niceone Sunny that had sticky windows. Whipped the door cars off and gave the whole mechanism a good dose of greasy stuff, ran it up and down, re-greased and presto. Did the job quite well. :)

Alex

start with the simple stuff first.. get some silicon spray grease and lube up the rubber channels that the window glass runs in, it's very unlikely to be the mechanism itself that is dry

Cheers Tom & others. Will get some on Tuesday. Hope your Christmas Day has been a good one. We did a 70 mile round trip to the inlaws in Clacton, and the good old Felly didnt miss a beat. Heated rear window defrosts bloody quick too :)

Power windows are designed to "Cot out" If too much pressure is needed to raise them... Stop you from getting your head jammed or something similar!

As mentioned, cleaner glass and well lubed mechs can be of enormous benefit if they are jamming without proper reason.

As an aside, mention of the Clio's spurred me to mention that I am changing the sunroof on my daughters clio as it has jammed up and leaks.

On removing the panel, I noticed how flexible and floppy the roof panel was and that water seems to be leaking in AROUND the outside of the sunroof, not through the rubber seal that goes between the glass and the frame. (There were gaps where the sunroof had become loose).

The old frame was siezed up but the motor works so I have now to re-fit the new one and will seal all around the frame with silicone sealant as I fit it and screw it together. This should help prevent the roof and the sunroof forming gaps and leaking as water accumulates in the sunroof and leaks when going round bends.

I have also noticed others having problems with leaks around the glass seal but these are replaceable, at least, on some types. Otherwise, sealant time again!

If in the meantime you suffer from leaking roofs, duck tape will do the job... Looks horrid but will last the winter and even more if you take your time and apply it well.
