Yellow steering wheel light on dashboard

Featured Replies

Hi

I bought an octavia elegance MK2 recently and just a few days ago, a yellow steering wheel light appeared on the dashboard, steering is fine, I dont know why its come up, I have noticed that the tyre pressure was low so i sorted that out and also the tracking needs doing as the car veers to the right, I dont know if that has anything to do with it. Does the electro mechanical power steering also use hydraulic oil? or is it oil free? Could it be a faulty sensor?

Thanks

Is it heavier to steer?

The manual says: Yellow steering light: a partial failure of power steering and the steering forces can be greater.

Thanks, no its quite easy

Find someone with VAGcom and get a fault code. It there are no symptoms it's about the only course of action.

assuming it's diesel? it may be the battery, yes I know it starts!! if you only get a repeat again first thing in the morning next time try waiting for the glow plug light to go out then after another 3-5 seconds you will hear a click --then hit the starter it should be ok maybe just chargeing the battery will help

+1 for the battery!

+2 for the battery

yeah its a diesel, it seems like it had a new battery when i bought it, I guess I can get the battery charge checked out, thanks

If you take the battery off, reseat it and then drive a short distance in a straight line the light should go out.

If not then get the fault codes read by a dealer or somebody with VCDS in your area.

If you have a battery charger it's worth giving it a charge after you have topped up the cells with deionised water (The lids are hidden under the sticker on the top of the OEM battery).

The steering pump pulls up to 60A IIRC, so it's probably going to be one of the first things to complain about a weak battery.

I don't think it's the battery, I've had mines a good 7 months now & it was on when I bought it, recently changed the battery & it still stayed on! Never had time to get it VAG com'd!

checked the fusible link in the battery top cover? sorry brain fade thinking of a Fabia/Ibiza but there will be one somewhere

checked the fusible link in the battery top cover?

My Dad god rest his soul had this same problem when the battery went dead on his 53 fabia, it worked out it is a separate power supply to the power steering unit which rely's on the battery charging this up. The light should go out after about ten to fifteen minutes of driving other than that check with vcds for fault codes.

hmm, thats interesting, i dont have a battery cover, I didnt know it had a fusable link in it, maybe when you take the battery cover off, it messes the totally disconnects the fuse link hence causing the problem?or am I speaking alien language?

Wasn't it only the MK1 Octy that had a fusible link in the battery cover?

My MK2 has a battery cover but it's just a relatively flimsy plastic top that clips over the battery - definitely no fusible link or other electrical gubbins attached to it.

i recently replaced my battery but before doing so i called skoda for a price (was only really fishing for exactly what battery to get) anyway..... they told me i would need to bring it into them to fit because the steering light would need to be re-set. Me being me i though they where bulsh*tting me and i went ahead and changed the battery myself.

Like your problem the light did come on but after 15 miles of driving it the light went off by itself and has never come back on. In addition i do have vag-com and it never registered as a fault code (skoda lied to me yet again).

If you do manage to get it on a VAGCOM and it is showing a fault with the radio it means the battery has been changed, not sure what the fault code was as mine never asked me for the radio code but it was triggered by the battery change anyway.

Hope this helps.

I have a 2008 octavia diesel estate, ex plod, became sluggish when starting and red steering wheel light came on, advised to change battery, which I did, I now have a yellow steering wheel and a skidding car light on dash board ?, have diagnosed it, but shows no fault codes.....................any ideas

apart from that fantastic car to drive...........

For about a week the yellow steering wheel light appeared, i have replaced the battery with a new battery, and did the steering wheel reset, all the way to the left, keep it for 10 sec and all the way to the right, again kept it for 10 sec there, then in the middle position for about 35 sec, switched the engine off and took the key out and started the engine again, light is still there.

The VAG fault code 18051 showed, which does point out that the battery is not delivering the right amount of voltage.

The alternator is checked, no issues there.

Who can point me the right direction?

my car is the same been told it is a  Steering Wheel Angle Sensor that fits behind steering wheel

well ive just resolved the self same issue on my mk5 golf, as directed above check battery 1st, then you need to remove battery and airbox completely and clean all ground points around that area, mine were starting to corrode and causing intermitent/no signal errors fror multiple modules in the car, one of which was the steering rack showing red warning light of dash, I believe the peachish coloured wire located beneath the airbox is ground for steering rack

while your under there check the wiring for chaffing ect

hope this helps

I used this info for my mk5 golf, I would assume Octavia being mk5 platform these will be the same

Bentley's lists the grounds on 06 jetta as:
1. Ground 656: Engine comp, top of right front chassis member, underneath headlight (low & outboard, keep looking, it is there. 1 wire from radiator/condenser attached).
2. Grounds 43,47, 636: Passenger comp, base of A-pillar, behind trim (1 wire from harness that runs along foot well attached).
3. Ground 15: Connection at right end of cylinder head (Believed to be into the ECM harness) (verification needed).
4. Ground 1: Battery to chassis, under engine hood, near battery. (Battery negative to chassis connection).
5. Grounds 51, 663, 675: Right side of trunk, on inner wheel housing, behind trim. (2 wires attached).
6. Ground 61: Left side trunk on C-pillar, behind trim (empty)
7. Ground 50: Left side trunk,on inner wheel housing, behind trim. (1 wire attached)
8. Ground 609: Engine/transmission ground, on top of left front chassis member (under air box).
9. Ground 609: In plenum chamber, next to right strut tower (empty).
10. Ground 642: Engine compartment, on top of left front chassis member (outboard of air box behind headlight) (1 wire, J-500 steering module attached).
11. Ground 640, 655: Engine compartment, on top of the left front chassis member (under & near headlight)(2 wires attached)
12 Ground 607: In plenum chamber, next to left strut tower. (1 wire from dash to wiper harness).
