How would you rate 1.9 tdi AHF engine

Featured Replies

Hello chaps

thinking to get newer skoda octavia 1.9 tdi, but i have started to change my mind. My skoda have 1.9 tdi AHF 81kW engine and never had any sirious problems. Been looking to get octavia mark2 but it appears that 1.9 engines have an fundamental probelm with premature wear on camshaft lobes, injectors not lasting too long etc.....

Newer octavias i was looking at were classic and ambiente and engines power ranges from 90bhp to 105bhp which is still less than mine 110bhp.

What do you think?

Regards

I have the 110 ASV engine which I imagine is similar to yours. Apart from being a bit noisier and agricultural than the PD, I've found it to be bomb proof! PD engines are smoother though.I think the diesels which pre-date the emissions cull we have seen in the past few years still have lots to offer. They just don't give out the right carbon figures and therefore don't look good on paper. In practice? Well, in summer I regularly see 70 mpg from mine. Something these more modern "cleaner" diesels seem to have a hard time achieving. Something to bare in mind if you're thinking of sticking.I think the PD engine represents a fair trade off between old and new. Slightly less refined than the newer CRs but also less strangled. That and the fact that if you're going for a MK2 it's your only choice unless you go much newer or petrol.

Hello JCB,

thanks for your opinion and effort you made to explain the diffrence. Dont get me wrong, my skoda is powerful enough its just the fact its gettin old and i wish i can buy another octavia with the same engine but lot newer.

Ive seen 2008 skoda octavias with 1.9 tdi engines, would this be pd engine?

regards

I've got a 110 ASV too but I don't get anywhere near 70mpg from mine. General average is more like 44-45mpg, but it is possible to achieve up to 60mpg if I drive it very gently on a long run. Mind you, it has done 170,000 miles but it still performs really well.....

yes, same as mine. I can archive 60mpg if im very gentle with the throttle. Normal run around between 42-46. Mine one has done 112000 miles?

how about mark one skoda octavias 2008 tdi?

Do they have pd engines?

If you are talking about a Mark 1 2008 then it would most probably have a PD engine. Think they started putting them in after 2005. Maybe others on this forum could clarify. Also understand that they are still made for the taxi market, obviously with PD engines in. Personally, I think the Non PD is a more easier car to work on and has less to go wrong. Don't forge that PD's use the 'unit' injecctor which are much more expenside than the regular injextor used in non PD's

the rotor pump series engines are a lot simpler and dont seem to give as much (expensive!!!) trouble as the PD type, mile for mile the rotor pump engine will be more econimical to run mpg wise. my ideal car would be a 2005 octy estate with the 110 non PD engine.

no need for "special" oils easily tuneable and will happily see off 500K before needing any sort of mechanical work providing its serviced every 10K

fair point guys,

i do agree with you all. I do tend to service my baby at least three times a year (decent oil and filter change). I love my octavia to bits specially since ive installed full VRS interior. But as its getting old now i really thort to get something newer.

Regards

Having owned a 1.9tdi 130bhp PD passat and currently driving a 1.9tdi asv non pd i have to say the only difference is the i find with the non pd is that its a bit more noisy although as stated above i get much better MPG from the octavia. Both cars have around the same millege (around 75k) and i was told by the VAG specialist that i use the other day that they started putting pd engines in octavias around the end of 2003 into 2004, most of the mk1's from around that period would be taxi's tho or basic trim levels.
