Would there be a problem mixing these tyres

Featured Replies

Fabia VRS:

One son has 4 Toyo Proxes T1R and is pleased with them.

Other son has Continental Sport Contact 2 BUT two tyres need replacing and he can get 2 Toyos at a very good price and can't get the Continentals as there is a shotage. He needs to get the tyres locally today or tomorrow. The question is...

Is it OK to put two new Toyos on the front with 2 reasonable (4/5 mm) Continetals on the back, bearing in mind their different characterisitcs?

Thanks

They say new tyres should go on the back to stop the rear end coming adrift

Personally I put them on the front

they should be fine as both are good brands so the difference in grip should small. Just don't forget the new will need scrubbing in.

HTH

im running 2 toyo t1-rs on the front with yoko pradas on back. no problems been on for last 20k

if it was me id leave the rear tires as they are untill i could get another 2 toyos and go toyo t1-r all round as they seem to be a quieter tire for road noise.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately things have changed. No Toyos now but offer of Goodyear Eagles F1 GSD3. Not sure about this because they are supposed to be one of the worst tyres in ice and/or snow.

I run different pair of tyres on my car. I have F1 GSD3s on rear and a warn pair of Toyos on front. I will be replacing the fronts with Rainport 2s soon (If I can get hold of them). It is perfectly OK (and legal) to do that. You can replace tyres individually, but it's always best to do them in pairs (for 2wd cars). I think you are actually getting mixed up with winter and summer tyre. Most people say you should buy 4, because of the huge difference in grip levels on snow, ice etc. All of your tyres are classed as "Summer" type, so it doesn't matter that much.

I always put new tyres on the front as they clear most of the water, put down the power, steer, and do most of the breaking. The rear tyres are only there as casters. However new research done by Michelin and other companies say you best tyres should be on the back, ie loosing grip on the front is not as bad as loosing the rear.

If you are wanting Toyos how about buying them online.

PROXES TOYO T1 R - 205/45R16 - Camskill

£61.99 inc.VAT each (plus postage), or £123.98 (inc VAT) a pair delivered to your door. Then add £10 ish each to be fitted. I used Camskill to order my Toyos 2 years ago, and can't say anything bad about them. When ordered they came the next day. :D

As mentioned above, both Goodyears and Toyos are classed as Summer tyres and I found them both useless in Snow/slush/ice. However Toyos seam to cope a bit better in the cold and frost.

Thanks for all the information.

I suppose I was after a summer tyre that was also not terrible in snow/ice. I have spent 4 hours looking and searching (not just this site) and it seems a good compromise is the Rainsport. There is so much advice that is contradictory as far as comparisons go. In the end we are going to wait a few weeks and look into it more. The Michelin Pilot Sport SP2 also seems very good but again problems in winter (as expected). It's a minefield, but tyres are obviously so important and there has been so much ice this year

Thank you all for giving advice

Edit: Just to add that there always seems to be a downside. For example, on a review site, a Fabia vrs owner likes them but they increase the roll of the car (due to the tyre walls) and this is already a slightly weak area.
