Winter tyre documentation

Featured Replies

From information on this forum I've fitted winter tyres to both our Octavias and we are delighted with the Nokian WR's performance. Looking through the Owners Manual it states on page 268 "The permissible sizes of winter tyres are stated in your vehicle documents". Can anyone tell me where exactly? I've looked through all the paperwork supplied with our cars with no success.

Couldn't find it either.

Don't think its that important really as long as you got them professionally supplied and fitted for your model.

Mine came from Mytyres and there's obviously a facility on there for cross referencing sizes to specific cars.

Thats good enough for me !

I'm presuming you went through a similar process?

Its inside the fuel flap

Don't know what the contents of the Vehicle Registration Certificate includes in the UK, but here in Finland it has the allowed tire sizes listed, including the speed rating required for summer tires.

The law here in Finland says that if you choose to use lower speed rating (summer) tires than those specified in the certificate, you have to have a sticker in the dash reminding of that. For winter tires, you don't have to have a sticker, since almost all proper winter tires here are Q (160 km/h) or at most T (190 km/h) rated anyway.

edit: typo

If they are the same size as the original tyres, they will be fine, but you must not try and run snow chains on them as they will damage the suspension and pipes around that area due to clearance issues.

I went through mytyres for supply and had them professionally fitted locally. For the 1.6 Ambiente I got some 6J steels as opposed to the 6.5J alloys and reduced the tyre width accordingly. For the VRS I followed the advice in this forum and went with 16's rather than fit winter tyres to the 18 in Zeniths, 205/55's giving almost exactly the same rolling radius as the 225/40/18's. Thanks for your replies but there must be an official list of fitments somewhere.
