Rubbish roads and an ignorant Golf driver

Featured Replies

Had a ride out today across the Yorkshire Wolds to Pickering and the roads are in a shocking state due to the weather. Would shame a supposed third world country :S

Anyway on the way home we had a tailgating Golf driver who obviously had somewhere to be like yesterday; unfortunately he/she decided to overtake on the first bit of straight road. This resulted in a shower of dirt and loose stones being thrown across the front of the car; not helped by the fact they kept their nearside wheels on the centreline of the road for some time.

Although our Fabia II is now 4 months old and 3500 miles on the clock it was totally unmarked; now need a touch-up paint set to fill in few holes on the bonnet emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Thanks ignorant Golf driver :swear: :swear: :swear:

Tailgating is a bit out of order, but you can't really blame a guy for overtaking and throwing up stonechips can you? I agree tho the state of the roads is unreal

But you would expect the common courtesy of not overtaking in that area or at least staying of the line of gravel in the middle of the road.

Courtesy is a two-way street ... did the OP indicate left and ease off slightly at the start of the first good place to overtake?

dont fanny about at 30mph in a straight line?

We had a drive out to whitby today & i agree the road from pickering to whitby had numerous pot holes along it,some were very deep too. cars were swerving round them.

At what point did he say he was doing that?

The roads are atrocious everywhere :( Up here, they've been spreading gravel since they ran out of road salt.

Roads are horrendous here too. My car's bonnet is in an awful mess, I expect only a respray would sort it. Mostly this is due to the poor surfaces they put down anyway, loose chippings instead of proper tarmac. Plenty of new pot holes here too, what do we pay for road tax for :wonder:

Richard,

car tax hasn't had anything to do with paying for the roads for years. That's why it is now called Vehicle Excise Duty.

Didn't know that!

why did you assume he was doing 30mph

surely his speed is not the issue here

if someone is up his arse n overtaking, i assume he was fannying about... especially when on a 'drive out' and in a fabia...

just saying....

I didn't know that one either! So where does the money come from to fix the roads? I hope it isn't like everything else where the budgets are being cut!

He was probably driving taking into account the road conditions and like most normal people wouldn't want to hit a pothole at speed or have to swerve to avoid one at speed. Unlike some people, we take care of our cars...

I think that it is about time that the RFL did perhaps get pumped into the roads and we may once again be able to get somewhere in good time and in comfort.

+1

I've emailed the council twice now to complain about the third world road surfaces in the East Riding. Not surprisingly I've had no response. Roads between here and Langtoft look like an Afghanistan minefield. A total disgrace; some of the surfaces in question have only been down a year too. That's what you get for bodging repairs with substandard materials.

Have you seen the pot holes on the 166 as you come out of stamford bridge? i have complained to the council loads about these, you have to go way over the white line unless you want to damage your wheels & suspension!

  • 1 month later...

yes, that road's appalling. I had the pleasure of having a letter published in the Driffield Times complaining about potholes!

Just be glad yours made it to 4 months mine didn't even last a week.

Roads in this country have more incommon with a gravel rally stage than proper developed world tarmac roads.

Having a look at the local County Council forecast finances a while back and I remember seeing last years cost for road maintenance at being twenty something million. Now our council has combined several departments in the past so things like planning and transportation, economic development etc. all sit under one large department in a bid to cut costs. This entire departments budget for this financial year... just one million more than the cost of maintaining the roads alone last year!

What this will transpire to I honestly don't know but it doesn't look good! Our roads are already quite poor and are getting worse by the day. Just yesterday I took a trip to Brandon park and the road there was so uncomfortable it was unbelievable.

I'm already writing off the idea of having another performance version of a car in future as the stiffer suspension and lower profile tyres only make the situation worse, even to the point where these cars are probably slower from A to B than their non performance counterparts because they are being bounced all over the place!

Yep they're shocking. I went out that way to go to the old simos scrappers on Sunday and they're so bad; someone has even stuck a traffic cone in one to help people avoid it.
