"You dirty b*itch!"

Featured Replies

i had a go at the throttle body clean today and what a difference it has made. big thanks to chicken eyebrow for the very helpful guide on here as well. not really a surprise it has made such a difference when you see the state that it was in. is this possibly the dirtiest throttle body on a mk1 vrs you have seen??? :giggle:

Good to see you got it sorted :)

Just curious of the year and mileage mate?...

Edited by Liam-6

that's nothing compared to what mine was like mate, mine was completely black with no metal showing.

Yeah mine was worse than that, not completely black though!

Mine started with running troubles and EML came on after 97k on an 02 reg.

8 months ago I cleaned my TB and now it looks just like yours

the car is an 02 plate and covered 48k. not much but then again with no motorways where i am, im guessing it causes abit more grub to build up on the TB.

yeah i really think that it needs to be done every 6 months but seeing as i dont have the time on my hands with a new born baby im going to try and do it annually

Where will I find the info/link to do this?

Going to order a new gasket and do mine this week, its had a years worth of driving so about 5k, I'll post up a pic.

Mine was much dirty than that,my mk 1 vrs had done 130k though. It did make a big difference to the cars running! :)

reminds me I need to order a gasket to do this.

what running problems do you get when its carboned up?

Not rubbishing anyones claims here, but Im wondering whether this is a placebo thing. How can a bit of gum on a mechanical device affect the running of the car that extensively?

I see your point , but I would imagine that it may been that the air passing through the throttle is smoother and less restrictive with a shiny internal TB as apposed to a carbon up rough TB that airflow would hit. Also it the TB is really carboned up then maybe the TB is not opening up smoothly.

theres a float inside thats coneccted to the accelerator pedal ... if its carboned up it sticks hence the rough tickover .... mine was rough tickover when i startd it cold , didnt like running till the choke had completly dropped offf and the revs use to drop off them come back when the choke was on .. also i had a 'black spot' when i put my foot down and the revs wasnt constant on tick over after it got warm .. car has full service history and all filters changed regular ( inc MAF ) ... the car runs smooth now on tick over when cold and when moving .. it had a few mm's worth of carbon in it and took me a good hour to remove it .... when i picked the gasket up from skoda ( had to order it in and hadnt a clue on the part munber for it .... good job i took it off here :) they admitted that they ' cant be bothered to strip them and clean them' hence why they tell u that u need a new TB at a cost of £300+ ... it cost me £4.46 for 2 gaskets ( i kept a spare )

Also it the TB is really carboned up then maybe the TB is not opening up smoothly.

That's what I found, I had my missus hold the accelerator whilst I cleaned it and it was not very smooth before cleaning and silk smooth after

It's definately not a placebo thing, before a throttle body clean my EML came on and i had two error codes, one of them being the common 17705 code that everyone dreads.

after new gasket and throttle body clean only the EML light remains off and no fault codes..... thats after 3 months.

Jon

Good to see these responses. Ill put it on my list of things to do!

just watch u hands though .. the tb edges are pretty sharp .. my knuckles will tell u lol

cleaning mine at weekend do i have to reset anything on it?????????????? guessing carb cleaner is ok as this was a common problem on my mk3 gti causing bad idle and poor tick over when you let off

No, just leave it plugged in and get a spare gasket in case you need it.
