Need help with my Skoda (02 L & K 1.9 Tdi)

Featured Replies

I think it does. The service book shows that the las service was done at 127,709 (04.2010). The car now has 136,000 and I'm doing 250m p/w. The engine seems very rattly and quite noisy but my last car was 2.2 petrol vectra which was so quiet that inside I was often turning the key when it was already running :D.

I have a number of questions as I never had a diesel:

1. It smokes white smoke when I start it for the first couple of minutes and I also have problems with the turbo.

2. The car chokes quite often when I accelerate and drives in a limp mode. I have to switch it off and on for the engine to gain it's power but it's quite annoying. I bought the Radox injector cleaner, hoping it would help and overdosed it on purpose. The engine is a lot quieter now but it still looses power. My friend came over, unplugged some kind of valve just behind of manifold and blocked the pipe thet led to it. He asked me to rev the car hard for a week and then plug it back as it was but it was making a weird noise when I was turning off the engine so I quickly did as he asked but earlier, one day later. I've heard a bout the sticky turbo problem but is there no way of cleaning it by changing the viscosity of diesel?

3. Oil- I bought the filters on ebay but had a bit of a problem with the oil. I couldn't find the one my service schedule asked for!. I have a QG1 engine, which refers me to the oil with VW 506 00 spec. I couldn't find it anywhere! I drove to Halfords, looked through their booklet and asked the bloke behind the computer and they both directed me to buy Castrol Synth. Edge TD 5w-40. The problem is, it doesn't have that number listed, but these instead: VW 50200/505 00/505 01. Is it an issue or can I use it? And is 4l enough. I have 10w-40 Semi- Synth Mobil One in my garage. Could I use two different oils and top Castrol up with Mobil 1?

4. Timing belt- the last one has been done (according to the book) at 120000. It now has 136k. Is it time?

Many thanks for all your help!

I have a QG1 engine

I think that QG1 means variable service interval, (which only makes sense if you almost entirely using it for motorways).

According to Parkers your car has a 110PS Tdi engine (5-speed gearbox), which means it isn't a PD, so the oil requirements aren't so stringent. There are various threads here that discuss types of oil -- do a search -- and you'll find that VAG have newer oil specifications that supercede older specifications. If your usage profile fits then you'll want the latest oil spec for variable service, otherwise change to the fixed interval service (10,000 miles) and use the oil for that instead. I've found that whatever the Skoda dealers supply is a reasonable price.

Thanks for that. I don't think people at Halfords would provide my with false info, would they? I remember the lady behind the monitor asking if I have a 'pump' diesel engine and I replied that I did. A friend who changed the alternator for me said that it wasn't the new injection but the 'old pump diesel'. I know little about mechanics but even if I got the wrong oil, I'd still change it after a year (12k miles). But if it isn't a PD engine, what type is it then?

What engine is it?

There should be an options label in the boot and in the front of the service log book. Half the way down the left hand side it will give you the engine code.

What engine is it?

For the OP, I'm guessing it will be AHF or ASV -- don't know how they differ but both are 110PS non-PD engines. The L&K only came with the 110PS and 130PS engines, the latter being a PD and only available from 2003.

But if it isn't a PD engine, what type is it then?

See the Wikipedia entry on these engines.

I looked on the label and found that it's the ASV.
