Octavia vRS 2.0 TDI annoying friction / grinding noise

Featured Replies

Hi

I'm having an ongoing issue with my Octavia RS 2.0 TDI, there is a friction/rubbing sound while engine is warmed up and it can be heard only inside the cabin ( outside the cabin cant be noticed , link to the file with recorded sound below:

Please bear in mind that issue is much more prominent if the car is warmed up, cant be heard if engine is cold. Skoda dealers in Ireland are helpless, I’ve already paid them 3 visits and every time I was told that problem must develop in order to be properly diagnosed.

I’ve recently noticed that on the left hand side of the engine, there is like a clicking noise coming from what seem to be a vacuum pump, could this be somehow related to my issue?

Would someone happen to know what the problem could be please?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Summary - friction noise :

• can be heard only from inside of the cabin

• friction noise appears with frequency of ~1.2s ( 10 times slower than engine’s revolutions )

• turning the fan on or off in the cabin, doesn’t change anything

• pressing /releasing the clutch doesn’t change anything

• odometer – 29K km, car is just 2 years old.

Skoda dealers in Ireland are helpless, ?

i reckon the dealer you visited done every thing they could to resolve the issue, bearing in mind the two other dealers done nothing to help you whatsoever !

if the noise cannot be clearly identified from backround engine noise then it can trial and error to find the problem. if you want to cover the cost of replacing parts, then the dealers would be happy to do this for you, otherwise the warranty guys will not pay for guesswork.

mmmmmmm........sound file

sounds like the aircon gas is low causing the expantion valve to pulsate, aircon pressures should be checked.

thanks for info, at last someone found few minutes.

I will get aircon pressure checked however I forgot to mention that one of the dealers did suspect that air compressor could be the root cause, but they weren't sure due to the fact that friction sound can be heard only inside the cabin.

Do you think it would be worth to remove the belt on the aircon and check if friction sound occur? ( advise from one of the friendly mechanic )

Is it time consuming or risky to damage anything?

Thanks in advance

it would be ideal to run it without the belts, ....but you might trigger a lot of trouble codes as i think the same belt runs the alternator. you could try disconnecting the block connection at the compressor. otherwise the gas should be checked.

be aware the warranty guys will not cover top ups or regassing unless there is a leak or some other mechanical fault with the system.

Thanks T900, truth of the matter is that car is under warranty so what I need is a skoda technician who knows what he is doing, someone to pin point the problem and resolve it.

It's been a year ever since the problem occured, it's not getting worse ( I made 10K since I've noticed the issue ) and ithis sound is... just driving me crazy.

I will have to arrange yet another visit and advise to check gas pressure and compressor itself.

Thanks for your time and advice.

replacing air compressor did resolve the problem :)

in case anyone has similar issue please urge to have belt taken off from the air compressor and check if friction sound still appear, if not replace the part.

Thanks for coming back to tell us what fixed your problem, all too often people don't come back for whatever reason and it makes trying to troubleshoot an issue tricky!

Glad you finally got it sorted out :)

I think i might have same issue, noticed that noise few times, although cannot hear it always.

As you said i can only hear that noise in cabin, pressing clutch or turning on/off aircon doesn't do nothing. Shame i cannot hear your record anymore to compare.
