I brought an 07 Octavia in the Autumn and it will be in need of its 80,000 miles service and cambelt change in a couple of months.

I don't know where to go to get this work done. In the past I've always had old cars which I've serviced myself or taken to the cheapest local garage.

It is out of Skoda warranty but I want to get the book stamped and keep the full service history going. What are my options? Can I take it to an independant non-Skoda-specific garage or should I take it to a Skoda specialist?

Also, what it the typical bill for this camblet change and 80k service?

Where abouts are you based? A decent VAG group specialist would be my first port of call. Cambelt and waterpump should be done together and will cost around £400 and the service will probably be a longlife one at around £250. Hope that this helps.

Checkout any local Independents that specialise in VW group motors or a German Car specialist, as most of these do VAG, BMW and Merc servicing. Failing that VW garages often have fixed price service offers, inc Cambelt change, that are cheaper than Skoda dealers.

Spend an hour ringing round using local Yellow Pages or Thompson

Total cost depends on what else you have done changing the water pump to a metal impeller one is often recommenced when the cam belt is changed as the labour cost for a new pump is the same as for a the cambelt so would get very expensive if it had to be change soon after the belt.
