Peoples Perception of Skoda

Featured Replies

I can't believe that anyone living in the UK today still thinks that Renault has a better brand image than a Skoda. I just laughed and said good!

No idea on brand image, but my Renault thus far has certainly been less problematic than my Skoda. :D

Interesting to see that when anyone criticises Skoda then it's badge snobbery, but their choice of a brand which isn't Skoda makes them an idiot. I can't be the only one who can see the irony...

if that is your clio in your sig then i presume that it is still under warranty? Give it time and the electrics will fail in some way or another!!!!

Still under warranty, but I've had no reason to use that (unlike with the Octavia). And yes, it's likely something electric will fail once the warranty is up, in which case it'll be no worse than aforementioned Octavia... :D

All the manufacturers are having to pull their socks up, having recently owned a FIAT 500, I got the usual jibes about reliability, build quality, & rusting, I just used to laugh along with it, specially as I found the build quality & fit was as good as the Fabia.

The car was a vast improvement on its 1980's predecessors.

Badge snobbery and prejudice exists across the board, hell it even happens here on Briskoda where we are not innocent of such things.

My brother in law has had 3 renaults as his last cars, all without fault, my mother has a Nissan note that has been faultless, my Toyota's have been faultess and my 12 year old MX-5 starts first turn of the key, even after all of the snow.

On the VAG front though, my wifes 2007 Polo SE has now had the heater pack in, it blows hot or freezing, and the blower only works on setting 2 or above (Just as the warranty expired) my Mk1 Fabia vRS was faultless, my Mk2 vRS had major coilpack issues and 1 total electrical failure, my MK2 Octy Elegance had Electrical gremlins, the vRoomster was perfect but the Mk1 Superb L&K had the usual electrical gremlins associated with water ingress, luckily all sorted on Warranty.

On Balance my Mk2 Octavia's where the most unreliable cars I have owned in recent years (the vRS being worse than the Elegance, but I did love the thing and miss it today), I did however have an excellent dealer in Alex Lawrie in Liverpool.

I would get them to do the Polo under warranty. It is an inherent fault. I had it done 3 times on mine and still wasn't working when i sold it and i know of 3 other people with Polo's who have had theirs pack up.

I will give it a whirl, our local VW Dealer isn't the best though.

Haven't found a good one yet tbh! the dealer will fob you off but just google the problem and then contact VW UK.

Chatting to a colleague recently and was stunned by his view of Skoda. He drives a Porsche 964 and has been a car nut all his life. He is looking to buy a cheap runabout for high mileage duties and fancied a mk IVGolf GT TDi (I used to own one) 130/150 and asked if I knew anything about them. I mentioned he shouldn’t discount the Furby vRS and he laughed at me and said he would never touch a Skoda with a barge pole!! Guess there is a lot of prejudices out there even now. I was most surprised with his attitude though, as he really is a knowledgeable car nut.

There are always some who are against the badge but I think that the fact that there is a waiting list for Skodas now says it all. I have not come across this sort of badge snobbery in real life though. Most people who know about cars have a lot of respect for the car and my Mark 1 Fabia VRS gets a lot of compliments. That is not a bad deal with the Mark 2 VRS. Is it me or is Skoda having trouble shifting this like the last one? I drove it and found it ver y quick but uninvolving and the complexity/ potential problems of the DSG and trick engine put me off.

I think the DSG is the problem, being a 7 speed dry clutch the potential to remap is limited as the torque output is very near to the maximum tolerances the gearbox can handle from factory!

They need to bring it out with either manual or the 6 speed wet clutch DSG.

Yeah I tried contributing to that thread several times. But at the end of day you cant educate the brain dead masses. Most people dont have a clue how the car industry works or indeed how anything works, so they buy an astra, a focus, a megane, a polo etc on finance usually. They retire, get that pension that isnt quite as good as they had hoped, go on a cruise, get a new tv to watch more mindless nonsense and nothing of educational value, buy another ford, vauxhall, renault etc car, get ill and then die. More are born, the cycle continues.

But Im living my life, I do research everything I buy and refuse to stay ignorant. I wanted a fabia since I was 14 so I got a 2002 SDi and I pay £105 12 month tax, get 65mpg, dirt cheap insurance, have VRS wheels, and if there is another fuel crisis I can use Veg oil or bio diesel quite easily. Ive got the last laugh. Almost any mechanic or genuine motoring enthusiast knows that Skoda's are excellent, and the prejudices didnt hold up to facts 20-30 years ago, let alone today.

No matter what anyone says ore does, there will always be a 'Hyacynth Bucket' badge snob

In all the years I had a Skoda I only had three problems:

1 - Fabia reverse light switch.

2 - Fabia brake discs.

3 - MKI Octavia vRS Rear brake light LED's.

All fixed under warranty :)

4 - MKII Octavia vRS..... errr, no problems :)

I think that the fact that there is a waiting list for Skodas now says it all.

What, they've got supply issues? :D
