Worrying noise(s) on drive to work

Featured Replies

Just when I thought all was good with the world...snow gone (for now!) & car cleaned...it's back to work.

More worrying is the noise/feeling that accompanied my drive in...a distictive 'wobble' (from the front) when the brakes were applied & the reoccurence of the 'chaffing' like sound from the o/s rear (present all the time now, but worse under braking).

Wondering if it might just have been a build up of ice and/or some crap I have pushed around when washing the car (it did sit for two days after it was washed, which won't have helped either). Worst case - maybe discs at the front? (only done 23k tho').

The car is due an MOT next month, so I'd best investigate further before then, if it persists.

Any thoughts?

Rusty discs (or even ice round brakes). Mine was like that after sitting in a snow drift covered in salt. Brakes feel/sound OK now after a few applications.

I do hope you are right...that's probably the best outcome I can hope for. The noise is still there after the drive home...which includes some dual carriageway speeds/braking. I'll give it a few days & get under the car at the weekend.

I have had the a chaffing sound from the rear on two occasions. Both were due to the protective plate mounted behind the disk rubbing on the disk. A quick push and twist here and there and it was OK. I have also had a problem with a wobble at the front that felt like I had lost a balancing weight, which was due to ice build up on the inside of the alloy wheel. Finally I recently had a scrape from the rear that felt like the pads were completely shot, this one was just a piece of gravel in the caliper. Might be worth a quick brake service before that MOT!

On a more positive note I have just had to have the edge of my disks cleaned up, no need for a skim yet I have done 62k "spirited" miles, so you should be OK.

I had the same problem with my van over the xmas period,i had used it in the snow & parked it up & when i came to apply the brakes i had a bad vibration & steering wheel wobble, after applying the brakes a good few times(from 50 mph) not hard braking but regular braking until the vibration went. It has been fine ever since & i had a look at the brake disc's & the are nice & shiny & rust free!. :)

I left the car under a car port for a couple of weeks during the bad weather and when I first drove it there was an awful chaffing noise from the rear every time I applied the brakes.

It was just a deposit left on by the handbrake being on for so long in the conditions and soon cleared off after a few stops.

One of the lads here mentioned the protective disc thing (he has a Seat Leon, that's prone to that), will check under the car at the weekend, when it'll be light & hopefully dry !

Well nothing conclusive.

Had time to have a quick ferret around the underside of the car today (well as much as a big lad can without getting the car up off the ground !) & apart from wondering if I have lost a balancing weight off one of my front wheels, can't see too much astray.

Question is, would the loss of a balancing weight cause the wobbling/vib only under braking, which seems to be the case or would I see a problem all the time?

Thankfully the noise from the rear seems to have subsided again...for now anyway!

Don't want to incur any unecessary costs by sticking the car into the garage, but with the MOT looming, I am wondering if it will get thro' with the 'problem'.
