Urgent Help Needed : Removing Ignition Barrel

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have done multiple searches on here and cannot find what I am looking for, when I put the key in the ignition today it just turned around to where it would normally start the engine, nothing else happened, So have removed cover around steering wheel and managed to get the ignition switch out, I can turn that with a screwdriver and car starts fine, I noticed a metal bit came out with the ignition switch, I imagine this is off the barrel, hence why when turning the key it doesnt do anything.

But I cannot find anywhere with instructions on how to remove the actual barrel. Does anyone know how to do this please as I cannot figure that out at all.

Regards

Jon

Hi Mate,

According to Haynes Manual.. there's a load of stuff about disconnecting negative terminal, removing steering wheel!! and steering column shrouds.. etc etc but essentially, the critical piece of information is:

"Turn the key to the "on" position, then insert a 1.5mm wire ir drill into the hole in the lock cylinder located next to the key, then withdraw the key, lock cylinder and sensor(?) from the housing."

Hope that helps

Regards

Richard

Hi, I have a Haynes manual for my car and it said about removing the steering wheel etc, but only extra bit was about the switch, seems your manual is a bit more in depth than mine. I did see a hole there but couldnt push it, thought it was just solid metal, will try again.

Thanks

Jon

Hi Mate,

I got the information from page 10.20, section 44 if that helps??

Not done a skoda before but on other vehicles i have you have to turn the key to the 1st or 2nd position then press something into the hole & this release's the ignition switch/barrel.

Many thanks for the pdf, well I finally got the barrel out, it was smaller than I thought, I also have the ignition switch out, its not that either, its the bit in the middle, and I am going to guess thats a sealed unit?????

Cheers

Looks like I am going to have to replace the whole thing, it seems to come as one unit. Does anyone know if its interchangeable with other skodas?

Cheers

There's a full lock set on eBay for 18quid can't send the link on my phone

Hi,

Yeah I just seen that, if i get that with the key, does the key have to be reprogrammed or anything or will it just plug in and work with they keys it comes with?

Thanks

Jon

You will need the key number (plastic tag), and someone with vag<something> (not vagcom) to recode the dash to accept the new key, iirc. Unless you can transplant the transponder from your old key into a new one.....

If its not the barrell and its not the switch im pretty sure the steering lock is the bit you actually require, I think you can get it seperate from the column.

Can you get a pic of whats bust?

Hi, Yeah its not the barrell that works fine and the switch is ok, currently I am running the car by turning the switch with a screwdriver, it is the steering lock bit, I wasn't aware you could get it seperate.

As for recoding a key, does the sensor ring not detach from the barrell at all? If so couldn't I just change that over?

Thanks for all your help :)

I think the sensor is just that, it relays the "key" it detects to the dash to decode. If the dash decides it does not like the key (due to it the key/transponder) issuing the wrong code then it will be a case of no-start.

Ah that might be better for me then as my barrel is fine, so could just change the barrel over and be ok then

Jon

The lock set was just the key bit by the looks of it the transponder is in the remote locking part which just slides onto the key part. Could be totally wrong but thats what the pics of the keyset looked like. Does sound like it's the steering lock bit thats broken on yours, so your lock may be ok

Hmm, does anyone know where I can get instructions on how to remove the steering wheel lock part from the ignition barrel, I am not sure if its designed to come out but all I need to do is change that and the problem is solved.

Jon

PS : Thanks for everyones help with this.
