Diesel Cold Start Issue

Featured Replies

I have a 2004, TDi Elegance 130 Octavia.

Cold start in the mornings seems to be getting progressively worse. A new battery was fitted a couple of months ago, since it was the original from new... old battery had definately had it, cranking was getting harder and harder.

However, now even with new battery (decent Bosch) when I do a completely cold start, the engine seems very "lazy" to get going, and its getting worse - i.e. taking longer. Warm start is fine, everytime - I suspect new glow plugs would be where I'm headed - agree?

How long have the glow plugs been in?

Also it could be the starter, I know its a different car/manufacturer but my Astra DTi was struggling when cold last winter to start, changed the glow plugs, glow plug controller and in the end it turned out to be the starter, cos one day it just stuck and failed...worth a thought. But start off with the cheapest thing first.

No idea... it doesn't seem to be directly realted to outside temp, just time left to cool. I.e. leave it 24hrs before to attempt to start and its sluggish (no matter if its 10 degrees or minus 5.... ) leave it a couple of hours and there's no issue...

Its off to the garage on Tue to get a few things put right that were missed off during service.... so I'll get 'em to put some new ones in.

check the earth and power wires to the starter/block and get the garage to check the draw on the starter motor. most probly is the starter tho
