Will AA fit new starter motor on a call out?

Featured Replies

As per title really.

I received the renewal documents yesterday for my AA membership that my GF's mum kindly pays for her.... now this is £16 a month and we've only used them twice in 4 years, once when i broke a driveshaft on my old Ford Racing Puma (just a tow to a garage), and once to fix a snapped throttle cable on my GF's old Clio.

Now i was thinking if i bought a new starter motor for my MK1 Octy and kept it until mine fails completely (it currently screeches on start up only) would the AA fit this for me on a home call out?

Given its a fairly straight forward swap i think theres a chance they might, or is this wishful thinking?

I could do it myself but am gonna wait for some warm weather, just thinking incase it fails in the mean time.

Personally, I doubt it.

The fact that you've got a new starter motor ready and waiting proves that you exepected the car to break down, and negelcted to get it fixed.

AIUI they are there to assist you with unexpected breakdowns, or to get you started or towed to a garage

No.

No the patrol can't fit member supplyed parts, you could try http://www.theaa.com/car-service/car-servicing-and-repair.html

and as you stated it hasen't brokendown so is out side the terms of your cover !!

If the car HAS broken down, its a straightforward job, you ask nicely, its not a 2nd hand part and the patrolman has time to do it a lot of them would do it rather than have to recover the car.

I would like to see a patrol recover a car for a starter motor it would get pushed or tow started 55 temp repair ,But Iagree its worth an ask , and would involve a brew !

You cant push or tow start an auto and if it wont hammer start you might have to have it recovered. I agree AA patrols luv a cuppa. :p

Thanks for all the comments, i was just curious as i got the AA renewal docs through and made me think.

The starter hasn't failed and fingers crossed it won't for a long while, it is however making the common screechy noise on start up so i assume it will fail if not cleaned and lubricated soon.

I am planning to change the starter myself when the weather warms up, it's likely i will buy the eBay motor bought by a couple of members on here recently but waiting for a review first. Obviously that means if it does fail i will have the part handy.

Also the fact the AA repaired the throttle cable on my GF's old Clio on the driveway of my old house made me think there may be a slim chance.

We'll see....................... well hopefully not, lol.

tbh if all your starter motor is doing is having a good old squeal there's probably not an aweful lot wrong with it, you should take out the solenoid and re-grease it and job done

I've read all the threads about removing, cleaning and re-greasing the gears etc but often this preventative maintenance doesn't last long. I can't be bothered with the hassle of doing it every 6 months etc.

If i'm taking it out to clean i'd rather wack in a new one and forget about it for a few years.

Got them to replace a clutch cable once, a year after fitting a tempory one, I got the new one and totally forgot about it and left it in the boot :giggle:
