Car sounding louder than normal.

Featured Replies

Over the last few days I've noticed my car's exhaust (and possible engine) is sounding louder than normal. the exhaust sounds more boomy, almost like Ive upgraded it.

Ive jacked the car up this morning and had a look and feel for a blowing exhaust but cant find any sign of this. Thought it may of been a slightly loose boost hose or something silly but the car seems to pulling as hard as before with no smoke coming out the back.

So im wondering does the exhuast become louder with age? its done 72k.

cheers stephen.

Does the Furbie have an undertray, like the Octys do? If so, check and see if the undertray is coming loose.

Otherwise, it's possible that the cat is breaking up, and falling down the pipe. If so, don't sweat it.

It sure does! Basically parts of the exhaust system corrodes over time and as soon as holes start forming, you start to lose the effects of the silencer(s).

So if it's starting to sound like you've whacked on a boy racer exhaust (as I call them), then a failing exhaust is the most likely culprit.

Badly corroded exhausts can also be an MOT failure and you could also fail a roadside check if your unlucky enough to get stopped.

Although it should not effect reliability/car performance too much, the noise will get louder as the hole size increases (which happens fairly rapidly once it's started) - a couple of months down the line you and everyone else around you will probably need ear protection!! Best to get it checked over by a garage if you don't know what your doing/looking for.

Most garages should be able to check the exhaust system for free and a new exhaust system would probably set you back somewhere around £100 - £300 including VAT and fitting, depending on exactly what needs replacing and what type of system you go for.
