Snow Monster CR140 TDI DSG Remap

Featured Replies

I snapped up one of Ben's 12 days of Christmas offers only days after I collected my new Snow Monster.

I went up in the really awful weather last Friday to see Ben at Shark Performance to have my 1 month old Snow Monster remapped.

There is a more detailed description with photos of what Ben did Here

The results are impressive. The torque does not let up till it changes up around the red line. Elsie feels so much quicker now, and will go to the next gear much sooner - now holds 5th much more around town. I've not had the right conditions yet to have a proper play yet, but initial impressions are that Elsie has been transformed, and will get better as she learns the new setting both for the engine and the DSG gearbox.

Ben reckoned that power is up from 140 to around 180/185bhp and torque up from 320 to about 440Nm. It certainly feels impressive.

So far fuel consumption is marginally better, but I was driving it faster back from Mansfield than when I drove up.

Many thanks Ben. Another satisfied customer.

Mike

That's a mightily impressive improvement from a CR140; good news.

I just need to get a few miles under Kevin's wheels before I brink him to Shark Performance later in the month for him to be given his wings. ;) Can't wait ..................

Sounds good. For some comparison, I had my PD140 with one of Ben's STS maps roaded at RS Tuning the day after I loaded the map and recorded 183bhp. Torque was just short of 300lb/ft (298 IIRC).

I understand the CR units supposedly respond better to mapping, so it would certainly be interesting to see some RR results

congrats mate, sounds like it was a worthwhile mod :) heard nothing but great things from Ben and looks like another happy customer :)

Hi again wardy,

how do you find your remap to live with? did you like the STS unit method? :)

How's the mileage coming on, the RR day is on the 30th. Will you be ready for a shoot out emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

The performance is much better, but I almost (note almost) threw my iphone away today. It said, well actually, the BMW M Power app said that my 0-60 time was 22 seconds.....I have deleted the app instead.

It is way much faster than that emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Mileage is coming OK so far; got 345 on the clock this morning; will have 500 by the weekend.

Planning to get to Shark only in the second week in February (got commitments in the 1st week) when I should just have 1000+. Sorry but won't be doing the RR day.

I must say though I'm very impressed with Kevin, even though he is being driven with restraint for now. There are lots of little features that are really cool. Never driven a DSG box'd car until now and that it excellent too, although yet to give it a 'full workout'. ;)

Shame.

Glad to hear you're impressed with Kevin. What features do you like?

Visited AmD Essex today and had Elsie put on the rolling road.

She is up 21bhp and 40Nm over standard. I was expecting approx. double these figures.

900000 turned up and ran his as well, so I have a reference point.

The standard starts dropping off at 115bhp running out at 145bhp, whereas Elsie starts dropping off at 140, running out at 166bhp.

She is definitely more drivable than standard, but not as powerful I as was expecting..

Still happy, just want more...

Mike

As said by text, I'll have a thorough chat with you tomorrow about it and see what the situation is.

Cheers

to be honest i would get it rolling roaded somewhere else very conflciting figures these rollers were giving out, i.e three mapped fabias only getting 260torque, and a standard fabia got 240, they seemed to spend an age setting up the first run dont know if there were problems with the machine, but all in all rolling road figures are just talk if it drives better and fells quicker then

I will talk to Ben tomorrow.

The car is quicker lower down, and definitely pulls higher gears, but not as much I as I was expecting at 50+ on the motorway. With the Yeti having the aerodynamics of a brick, it needs more to cope.

I've done about 600 miles since the remap.

I have spoken to Ben, who has put my mind at rest.

I am sure the car has what he told me, even if the AmD figures don't.

It felt much faster than 900000's standard identical SM.

it pulls 4,5 & 6 from about 1200rpm which it didn't before, which means the engine and gearbox have learnt the extra torque available.

The car may not feel fast at say 50-70, but I think it's because the power delivery is so smooth, it probably is faster.

I remember when I test drove two Octavia's back to back, a 3000mile PD140 then a 7 mile CR170, both DSG, the PD felt faster, but the CR was actually faster because it was smoother and more linear power delivery.

I will at some point soon put it up on another rolling road.

Interesting scenario all round; I'd put my money on AMD's rolling road being 'off colour'.

You quoted "She is up 21bhp and 40Nm over standard. I was expecting approx. double these figures." by comparison Superchips from their website reckon up 33 bhp and 58Nm for their remap. Yes I can understand you would expect to see better figures.

Rolling Roads are particularly fickle and some are downright unreliable (despite what the operators will tell you) although I put my Octavia vRS TDi on the RRs at JKM and Superchips with six months between and they came out with 2bhp different, at a level I was expecting and that compared properly with other cars on the day. Maybe you were just unlucky.

As to your PD140 vs CR170 comparison, I know exactly what you mean as the power/torque delivery curves are really quite different which influences the way you feel about the car.

Having found an empty national speed limit road I tried a 0-60ish. about 10 secs. Not bad for a muddy road.

Tried again on a cleaner road. About 8.5 secs. so Ben must be about right with his 180 ish bhp. It might have been even less, I just cant drive and do everything else at the same time.emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

I took the Yeti around Castle Coombe on Saturday. Very impressive, the remap was great, as were the flappy paddles, but the most impressive thing was the way it went round the bends........emoticon-0140-rofl.gif That 4x4 was working very hard.....Try switching to our basic uploader

An awful lot has happened with me in the four months since this thread was started (and the additional month since I paid for my remap on Ben's '12 Days of Christmas' offers) but at long last I have got Kevin booked in with Ben on Thursday 16th June to get his wings; ooops, sorry - for his Remap and DPF removal.

Can't wait .....

I just hope that Ben is able to get back from Le Mans the weekend prior. :o

  • 4 weeks later...

Ben got back from Le Mans in one piece; just! :giggle:

I'm sitting on the leather sofa in Shark Performance's 'waiting room' (corner of the workshop) at present whilst Kevin is having major surgery i.e. DPF removal prior to Ben waving his magic wand over the ECU.

Good luck Kevin! :p

DPF removal is what Id do if I had to drive a modern diesel. Keep us up to date on the results (oh and say Hi to Ben from Beti with the cross gender Yeti with balls!) ;)

Ben says Hi!

just checked on Kevin; DPF still being disassembled.

My Yeti is going to JKM this Saturday so we will see what the figures really are compared to AMD ...will post up the graph when I get back

I did a JKM rolling road day 2 years ago with my Octavia vRS TDI. Their results were remarkably 'honest' and correct for all cars that day.

enjoy.

Guy, are you going to get Ben to do a few bits of recoding too?

(e.g. Get rid of Km/hr and put large speed indicator on)

Give him (and Cheryl) my best wishes.

Hmm; not thought of that.

I'm inclined to leave the MFD alone as I like to have the 'range' as my usual display and find the small kph reading quite helpful. I had a large mph reading on the Audi A5 I drove before getting Kevin and it was a PITA.

Mind you; if we have time I might just see what can be done. ;)

PS> DPF should be back in place by now, minus the ceramic honeycomb innards. Discussed the nature of the remap with Ben a few moments ago.

Should be gooooood. :giggle:
