a reason for quality oils and frequent change intervals

Featured Replies

ok guys thought some of you may like to see the pics of the inside of my felly 1.6 engine, and why changing the oil every 6K/12 months is a really good idea lol

this motor has done 130K with very little maintanence till the van it was in got smashed up and I borrowed the motor for my felly 4 years later :giggle:

the results are this

that is after a flush and a strip down for a clogged oil strainer :giggle:

and around 1K of me thrashing the arse off it with a few oil changes thrown in to help clean it a bit(didn't work by the looks lol)

I took the top off to change the cam for a reground kent one as it was just lying around gathering dust

arrrgh.. the black death :wonder:

this one here was exactly the same before i started with it..

edit: jimbo, do still bowl round in a 1600? i've got a ported cylinder head here gathering dust as you say

hi Tom yea I have the old L&K felly and fitted the 1.6 when the 1.3 melted, its only an old banger that I use for going to work to keep the VRS tidy and do the odd road rally in, had a lovely ported head here but it got a bit munched by the valve and piston meeting at 6K lol..

next road rally is 2 weeks away so hoping the ice and snow buggers off now lol

edit, my strainer was so blocked I cut the mesh off it in the end as it kept blocking up, its easier the change the oil filter than the strainer lol gotta love £100 bangers

pm me your address and i'll post it up to you, i think i must owe you one by now anyway

That's what I'm hoping mine doesn't look like as well!

Is it possible to get the sump off a 1.6 without taking off the PAS pump to shift the metal pipes out of the way? Last time I was under there it looked like there might be room to reach a ball-end hex bit in but of course I don't know how much clearance the bolts need to come out.

yes the sump will come off past the ps pipes but you may need to remove the bracket that holds the pipe to the block the allow a bit of movement, down pipe needs to be undone from the mani and dont forget to unplug the lambda first i left my front pipe hanging on the rest of the exhaust rather that disturb the joints etc

Thanks Jim . I'd rather make sure the sump and pickup aren't as clogged with what looks like baby poo as the oil separator was, before I put half a can of brake cleaner through it.

If I'd known just how much of a state this car was in when I bought it... oh, wait, I did!

make sure you remove the pickup pipe as it mine looked ok till I took it off and got a proper look at it (was causing the oil light to come on over 3k rpms) soaking in thinners overnight then a good blast thru with a power washer is prob an easy way, or buying a new one lol
