Is my turbo broken?

Featured Replies

Hi,

just looking for some advice as to whether my turbo is knackered or not, as can't really get to look at the car till the weekend now.

Anyways here's what happened....

The car is an 03 Vrs, it's been chipped by the previous owner (I don't know what map but it has but it's always been very quick off the mark and no major probs till now) but Mrs was driving the car to work and didn't tell me until she got home about some problems she had.

As she put it, on her way to work in the morning (20miles away) the oil pressure light flashed on for a while then went off.

On her way back home, it came on again, didn't go off, she lost all power and it started making a funny noise (her words).

She swore to me that she didn't try accelerating too much, so I assume it went into limp mode.

When she got home I had a quick drive, and from this knew that

  1. there was tappet noises coming from the engine
  2. there seemed to be no turbo
  3. there were some other whining noises (turbo me thinks)

Had a good search on here and found the oil pickup problem.

So, last weekend, dropped sump replaced pickup. Also checked other things and found that the Y breather hose was knackered, so replaced that.

Now the car runs and idles fine, the engine sounds normal but it seems to have lost the turbo, no real turbo sounds at all, but also there doesn't seem to have been a "blown turbo" noise or accompanying smoke.

It just runs like a standard engine with typcial acceleration over the various gears, but it sort of drops out over 60-70mph.

I put vag com on it and that brought up the following codes:

16717 - Knock Sensor 2

16712 - Knock Sensor 1

17704 - Error in Mapped Cooling System

Reset, and none of the codes have shown up again.

Tried disconnecting the MAF and no noticeable difference.

Have checked the vag com a few times and no other codes have been showing.

All I can think of is that the car is going into limp mode without sending an error code or the turbo is knackered.

Has anybody else had the same as this happen?

I think that if the turbo is ok that there is a boost leak somewhere, but that is really confusing me.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what may be happening?

Cheers for any help in shedding light on this.

drive it over to wokingham buddy and i will take alook for you if you want sounds to me like a boost leak pipe poped off but turbo failure is can be an issue with oil starvation

if you have vag com bring that to

im next to the station in during the day if you need me to take alook

that's very kind,

I'm not free till Friday but will pop over then if that's okay.

Much appreciated, sure beer tokens will suffice

iirc 17704 is the thermostat (don't quote me) did the temp gauge sit at 90? I'm sure that's the code when mine packed up.

Yes the 17704 code is either the coolant sensor or can be the thermostat.

The gauge never goes over 90, so perhaps that is the problem. I've already got a new coolant sensor, yet to put in. So may have to fork out for the thermostat too.

What's confusing though is that the car hasn't thrown up any error codes after being reset.

Thermostat fault won't throw a code, so its going to be the CTS.

I knew it was one of the two :giggle: I changed both at the same time to be sure
