*BANG* *PING* What the hell was that?! =(

Featured Replies

So...

Anyway... I went round a bend and heard a load *BANG* by the N/S front wheel (it was the car making a noise, nothing had hit it) then a *PING* like a spring flying off. Continued driving and now I can hear a weird "stetching spring" sound when I turn the steering wheel.

Car is still at it's normal ride height and the car still turns... but it sounds worrying.

Any ideas? :'(

Same thing happened to me just before Christmas. Scared the hell out of me!

Best bet is it's the near side front coil spring broken. Cost me £90 for local garage to fix.

Sounds like a spring. If you open the bonnet and have a look at the top mounts you will see the good one has a gap (about 1cm) and the broken one won't.

Beware also, they fit the correct spring(s) on replacement.

Coil spring. As Liverpool-Lad warned you. Correct VRS springs are dealer only, or Trade Part Specialists (Genuine VAG parts supplier). Been a bunch of people on the forum who've been caught out when buying VRS springs from Motor factors. BEWARE!

Nice one people - top diagnosis

What about uprated suspension? I've been thinking about replacing all 4 corners for a while - seems like an ideal time to do so. I don't want to lower it, mind...

Thanks again B)

Also make sure you replace top mounts and more importantly the top bearings as that can sieze causing the spring to break in the first place.

Ok, I'm looking at coilovers - if I buy a full lowering kit, will I need anything else?

Change the front top mounts and bearings while your doing it

I've already got powerflex and the superpro void fill bushes fitted but don't take pics as I'm normally at work when I faff with the car and these iPhone cameras are poop :giggle:

I'm sure others will find it a great help as with all the others you've done B)

had this happen to me today as i pulled off the drive, very annoying, even more so as it was the top most spring. This means the spring is seating right so it's pretty much undriveable
