Headlight Washer has stopped working

Featured Replies

Just a quickie...

One of the headlamp washers on my Vrs has stopped working...I knew something was wrong on the way home tonight (although I suspect it's been like that since the recent ice & snow !)

When I checked the one on the drivers side, appears to have packed in. Maybe it's just stuck, so the first port of call will be spraying it with some WD40...any other idea's? I think the fuse covers both, so it's not going to be that.

Plan to try the WD40 on the washer this weekend.

Any other suggestions? Can the cover be prised off carefully or will that likely damage the internals?

The washer is pushed out by a common high pressure water pump (separate from screen washers) so it could be that a pipe to that washer has come loose, popped off or split, no pressure = no pop out washer nozzle. Try firing the washers a few times and check for washer fluid leaking out around the front bumper.

Ok, cheers for that - will be checking this & my recoccurring sticky petrol cap this weekend...amongst some other wee jobs (& a wash !)

Well, checked out the washers today when the car got a well deserved wash etc - now they are both not operating (one was definitely working before - so don't think it's the fuse or the pump). I tried to see which pipe served them (is it a silver one ?) but don't know if I'd have easy access to check out it's route/connection(s) etc anyway.

I presume these being u/s is not an MOT fail, so easiest thing to do might be to ask the garage to check the problem out when it's in for it's MOT/BFC. I've free'd the petrol flap again, think it's just grit & stuff that's stopping it popping out each time.

I presume these being u/s is not an MOT fail.

I'm presuming your vRS has xenon headlights as this is the only reason for vRS's to get the headlight wash system.

In which case then yes they are a requirement for the MOT, as is the auto levelling function.

Not much help on a fix though, sorry.

Remember for the headlight wash system to work you need dipped headlights on. Also they don't operate every time you wash the windscreen, every fifth time I think it is...

Bugggr ! I'd thought the auto levelling would be, but not the washers ! I'll call the dealer tomorrow to see if they can investigate before MOT'ing it. Hopefully they can. It's not something I feel able to start tinkering with.

Was aware of the dipped/every 5th thing...I am sure my neighbours wondered what the heck I was up to this morning !

Yes it has the Xenons (one of the reasons I still have it...wanted to change but by the time I'd spec's up a new Vrs with the extra kit my car has...& of course all the other stuff I fancied...it was still too dear, even Vat free !)

Thanks for that silver1011.

Still waiting for the dealer to call me back. Never a good sign !

Now I am suffering from the chronic fogging up inside, just about every time I go to get in the car now (morning or night) the windows are steamed up & take an age to clear. This was one of the reasons I almost got rid of the car before & finally the dealer 'fixed it' of sorts.

Could this be in any way related to the headlight washers going awol? Could the screenwash be going anythere else? I've checked the rear wash wipe & it is still working & the tyre well is dry.

Any ideas?

Usually fogging is caused by wet in the car. Check the carpets for damp and the check the pollen filter. If the pollen filter hasn't beem replaced in a while it's a good idea to do this at the service anyway.

RESULT ! Wish I'd checked that fuse earlier !

I reckon what's happened is the drivers side must have got stuck during the recent ice/snow...my repeated attempted to free it/trying the lights & washers...must have caused the fuse to blow, hence why the 2nd one packed in !

Easy fix in the end...so can call the dealer off & save a few quid in the process. Fingers crossed for the MOT now !

Thanks to all who took the time to reply.
