De Chroming

Featured Replies

Afternoon all :)

Does anyone know anything about de chroming? Im looking to do my windows and grille surround on my Audi. Having had a tour around the tinterweb there seems to be three methods that most folk use:

1. Using tape!!!.....on many a forum someone has said "oh i see you used the usual tape method" !!...but i cant find anything about what exactly the tape method is!!!

2. Having the bits vinyl wrapped, which seemed easy enough to get info about, only to find that the Wrappers ive spoken to here in Ireland say its not worth doing as the vinyl wont take on such small pieces!!!

3. Having the said bits sprayed, but the last time i had that done (on the old fabia RS) it wasnt that cheap!!

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers

Kit

If it's chrome on plastic, try Mr Muscle oven cleaner; if it's chrome on metal, forget it.

Check this out...Had mine done recently and sure i can get you a price done if you wanted...

It's been mentioned before that leaving it in bleach for a while will soon sort it out.

Bleach!!!.....the window surrounds dont come off without a fight and apparently takes hours to do!!...so leaving them on is the way to go...so no bleach there me thinks!!

You can't use that excuse for the grille surround though! ;)

In all fairness, you just want to change the look and not remove the chrome lol.

The CF wrap always ticks the boxes for that effect.

Aye but i dont fancy the carbon fibre look on the window surrounds and trying to do them myself would im sure only results in a right pigs ear being made of it!!!

If you can still get them, there used to be oven cleaning pads, they where full of evil chemicals, but they would strip Chrome from plastic, Chrome from metal as well as things like anodising.

I used a few of them to strip the anodising from the frame and swing arm of my old RSV mille a few years ago so that I could then mirror polish it, worked a treat.

But even if i scrubbed them with an oven pad then surely they would need to be painted afterwards?

Indeed they would, but thats not a hard job, I just did some bit's on my MX-5 with Hammerite Satin black smoothrite, finish is perfect and very durable.

If it's metal / chrome you could just whip the bits off, sand them then prime with hammerite special metals primer, then spray with smoothrite satin black.

Did Kit ever wrap his car?

Wanted to do exactly the same thing myself, so started wrapping today.

No i didnt!!...car turned out to be a wrong 'un so traded it in for a an FL octy RS :)...was a shame though as i really liked the audi and it looked really well....apart from the crashy harsh suspension, the brake peddle rattled around, it sometimes wouldnt go into first, then to cap it all the was a massive water ingress under the dashboard!!
